Subject: SMB Subgroup: Developmental Biology

We are pleased to announce the formation of the SMB Subgroup on
Developmental Biology. We hope that this will provide a useful forum for
all those interested in understanding developmental biology phenomena
using quantitative approaches.

We will hold our next events during the SMB Annual Meeting in Sydney in
July (conferences.science.unsw.edu.au/SMB2018/). We have
submitted a proposal for a mini-symposium focused around quantitative
approaches to developmental biology, and will also hold our subgroup
annual meeting and a social event.

If you are interested in joining this subgroup, please email Ruth
(baker@maths.ox.ac.uk) or Alex (a.g.fletcher@sheffield.ac.uk). We have
created a Google Group (SMB_devBio_subgroup) as a means for
communication, and we will send you details to join.

Subject: Course: Infectious Disease Modelling, 18-29 Jun, London

INTRODUCTION TO INFECTIOUS DISEASE MODELLING AND ITS APPLICATIONS
organized jointly between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical
Medicine and Public Health England
Venue: London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
Course dates: 18th -29th June 2018
Cost: £2,490

Summary: Mathematical modelling is increasingly applied to predict the
future incidence and control of infectious diseases. Applications
include predicting the impact of control strategies, such as vaccination
or treatment, against pandemic influenza, Ebola, zika, measles, HIV,
vector-borne diseases and veterinary problems. Modelling was used
extensively in the UK during the swine flu pandemic to monitor the
extent of ongoing transmission and the potential impact of interventions
such as school closures and vaccination.

This two week intensive course introduces professionals working on
infectious diseases in human or animal populations to this exciting and
expanding area. The emphasis of the course is on developing a
conceptual understanding of the basic methods and on their practical
application, rather than the manipulation of mathematical equations. The
course provides numerous practical examples, including real-time
modelling of outbreaks, pandemic influenza, sexually transmitted
infections, HIV, Ebola, vector-borne and animal diseases, as well as
tuberculosis, measles and rubella, and health economics.

By the end of the course, participants will have deepened their current
understanding of infectious disease epidemiology and have gained an
understanding and practical experience of the basics of infectious
disease modelling, which will be important in their future work.

Subject: NSF: Integrative Strategies for Understanding Neural &… (NCS)

NSF has published the FY18-20 solicitation for Integrative Strategies
for Understanding Neural and Cognitive Systems (NCS
www.nsf.gov/ncs; NSF 18-533
www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf18533). As
summarized below, the program calls for proposals to advance the
foundations of one or more of the following focus areas:
Neuroengineering and Brain-Inspired Concepts and Designs; Individuality
and Variation; Cognitive and Neural Processes in Realistic, Complex
Environments; and Data-Intensive Neuroscience and Cognitive Science.
NSF’s Directorates for Computer & Information Science & Engineering
(CISE), Education & Human Resources (EHR), Engineering (ENG), and
Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences (SBE) are participating.
Proposals for new research projects, as well as supplements to existing
projects (managed by the CISE, EHR, or ENG directorates) will be
considered.

The new solicitation extends the program for three years (FY 2018
through FY 2020). The FRONTIERS proposal class, for larger projects, is
offered in the FY 2019 competition. The FOUNDATIONS proposal class now
includes proposals for smaller projects, as described further in the
solicitation.

Letters of intent for FY 2018 FOUNDATIONS proposals are due February 20,
2018, and are required for submission of a full proposal. Full proposals
will be due April 17. Please see the links and summary below for further
details.

In case of any disruptions to NSF operations in the coming days or
weeks, please look out for general guidance on the NSF and FastLane home
pages about whether and how due dates may be affected. Please note that
the NSF website will become unavailable if we have a lapse in
appropriations.

Subject: NSF: Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation…

A new NSF program solicitation (NSF 18-531) is now available:
Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI) – Data
and Software: Elements and Frameworks

Please see www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505505 for
details.

Full Proposal Deadline Date: April 18, 2018

Excerpts from the program solicitation of specific relevance to the
mathematical sciences:

The goal of the integrated CSSI program is to create a CI ecosystem that
spans all levels of the data and software stack and scales from
individual or small groups of innovators to large community resources.

A competitive proposal will:
-Identify science and engineering challenges where the proposed
cyberinfrastructure enables fundamental new science and engineering
advances, and describe how the proposed project fosters partnerships and
community development that will have a significant impact on science and
engineering research;
-Indicate how the proposed cyberinfrastructure builds capability,
capacity and cohesiveness of a national CI ecosystem; and
-Provide a compelling discussion of the cyberinfrastructure’s potential
use by a wider audience and its contribution to a national
cyberinfrastructure.

Successful proposals are expected to be of interest to multiple
directorates/offices participating in the CSSI program, and are expected
to be responsive to programmatic areas of interest for these
participating directorates/offices.

The Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) welcomes proposals that
either (a) build computational and graphical tools that have broad
application in mathematical sciences and related areas, or (b) translate
significant and recently-developed mathematical and statistical models,
algorithms, and methods into software tools that address substantial
problems or data sets in fields outside the mathematical sciences.

Any prospective PIs should consult with program officers from the list
of Cognizant Program Officers in the relevant research area(s) prior to
submitting a proposal, to ascertain that the focus and budget of the
proposed work are appropriate for this solicitation.
