Subject: 6th G. J. Butler Memorial Conference, Jul 23-27, Edmonton
The Sixth G. J. Butler International Conference on Differential
Equations and Population Biology will be held on the University of
Alberta campus, Edmonton, during July 23-27, 2018. This conference in
the memory of our late colleague, Geoffrey James Butler, follows five
highly successful previous such conferences. The Butler conference
series has developed into a premier international event in the highly
active research field of differential equations, nonlinear dynamics,
and mathematical biology, with a distinct Canadian character.
Each Butler conference will feature a Butler Speaker, a distinguished
researcher who will deliver three Butler Memorial Lectures throughout
the conference. The Butler Speaker for 2018 will be Professor Yang
Kuang of Arizona State University. Previous Butler Speakers were
Professors Paul Waltman, Jean Mahwin, Jack Hale, Gail Wolkowicz, and
Jianhong Wu.
Here is the registration link for all participants:

Subject: Postdocs: Infectious disease modelling, York U. (Canada)
York University is inviting applications for NSERC/Sanofi IRC
Postdoctoral Fellowships. The fellowship will provide financial
support to high-caliber scholars doing postdoctoral research that is
aligned with the NSERC/Sanofi IRC program.
The IRC program is currently focusing on 1). developing and applying
mathematical technologies to evaluate the effectiveness for prevention
of serious events in the population of high-dose inactivated influenza
vaccines; and 2). modelling the transmission of disease involving mass
gatherings and travel.
The candidate must have a doctorate in an area that falls within the
IRC mandate. The applicant must be supported by an IRC York team member
and the program Chair as the co-supervisors. The postdoctoral fellows
will be expected to interact with the IRC team.
The positions can start anytime, initially for one year but can be
renewed for up to a total of 3 years. The salary is approximately
$48,500 including $8,250 for a course instructorship. The salary will
be adjusted for those candidates preferring no course instructorship.
The salary could be complemented by other funds including those from
the IRC York team members, and those from external sources awarded to
the applicants.
Applicants should submit 1). One-page summary of proposed research in
the two currently focused research areas; 2). Curriculum vitae; 3).
some representative research; 4). two letters of recommendation.
Applications should be submitted to Professor Jianhong Wu at
wujh@yorku.ca.

Several postdoctoral research positions in Theoretical and Statistical
Neuroscience
POSITION: We seek several highly motivated postdoctoral research
fellows for a collaborative team project building theoretical and
statistical tools for interpreting large scale neural recordings. The
fellows will develop new methods and applications of probabilistic
graphical models to infer statistical interactions amongst neurons and
with their environment, and develop models of neural populations. The
tools will be validated in neural network simulations, tested in
physiological recordings, and made widely available to the neuroscience
community for understanding data from next-generation experiments.
TEAM: Fellows will join principal investigators and theorists Krešimir
Josić, Genevera Allen, Xaq Pitkow, Ankit Patel, and Robert Rosenbaum.
The team will interact closely with experimentalists including
co-investigator Andreas Tolias and several other labs interested in
applying novel methods we develop. Fellows will also be members of the
new Center for Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence housed at the
Baylor College of Medicine and supported in part by the NSF NeuroNex
program. The Center brings together interdisciplinary researchers from
across Houston, including members from Baylor College of Medicine,
Rice University, University of Houston, and University of Texas Health
Sciences. Researchers at the Center contribute diverse expertise in
fields including neuroscience, machine learning, statistics, physics,
computer science, electrical engineering, and applied mathematics.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have outstanding mathematical skills,
a PhD in a relevant quantitative discipline, and expertise in network
analysis/modeling, and/or probabilistic graphical models or statistical
machine learning.
APPLYING: Applicants should email a letter of research interests and
CV to Camila Lopez (Camila.Lopez@bcm.edu), along with contact
information for three references. We look forward to hearing from you!
