Subject: Book: Biological Clocks, Rhythms and Oscillations (MIT Press)

I am pleased to announce the release of my book, Biological Clocks,
Rhythms, and Oscillations: The Theory of Biological Timekeeping (MIT
Press).

The book brings together tools and techniques from many disciplines
(e.g., mathematical biology, nonlinear dynamics, physics, statistics,
and engineering …) into one volume. It contains practical advice on
modeling building, computer code, 123 illustrations in color and
examples from many systems (e.g., circadian rhythms, mood disorders,
neuronal firing, breathing, ecology ..).

You can save 30% with code MFORGER30, bringing its hardcover price
under $50, if purchased directly from MIT Press by year’s end. Feel
free to share this with anyone you think might be interested. It is
also the #1 new release in Biomathematics on Amazon, where it also
can be ordered (without the discount).

I will keep updates and notes on the book on my website.

I am recruiting a postdoc for a 2-year fellowship, to develop models
and theory for life history evolution in size-structured populations.
The position is joint with Dustin Marshall’s group at Monash
University and provides an excellent opportunity to develop theory
jointly with empiricists working on the same questions. The successful
applicant will be based at Queen’s University in Kingston Canada but
will also spend time at Monash University in Melbourne Australia.
Salary for the position is very competitive and research funds will
also be provided for the candidate to use at their discretion for
conference attendance etc.

There is no formal application deadline or start date but we are
hoping to find someone sooner rather than later.

Interested applicants should contact me via email.

MBI Postdoctoral Fellows

The Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI) is accepting applications for
Postdoctoral Fellows to start September 2018.

MBI postdoctoral fellows engage in an integrated program of tutorials,
working seminars, workshops, and interactions with their mathematical
and bioscience mentors. These activities are geared toward providing
the tools to pursue an independent research program with an emphasis
on collaborative research in the mathematical biosciences. MBI-
facilitated activities are tailored to the needs of each postdoctoral
fellow.

MBI also expects to hire for co-sponsored postdoctoral positions with
academic and private sector partners, including researchers at Ohio
State University and Battelle Memorial Institute.

For additional information please visit

From: Canavier, Carmen C. <ccanav@lsuhsc.edu>
Date: Tue, Nov 28, 2017 at 1:34 PM
Subject: Postdoc Position: Computational Neuroscience, LSU Health…

Two Postdoctoral Researcher positions are available in the computational
neuroscience lab of Carmen Canavier (email ccanav@lsuhsc.edu with
questions) in the School of Medicine, Department of Cell Biology and
Anatomy at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

The first position is to study the dynamic diversity of midbrain
dopamine neurons in close collaboration with electrophysiologist Jochen
Roeper at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. The successful
candidate will construct morphologically and biophysically realistic
models of distinct subpopulations of dopamine neurons to account for
experimentally observed differences in their bursting and pacemaking
dynamics. These simulations will require in some cases incorporation of
stochastic channel models and second messenger cascades.

Qualified candidates may submit resume along with cover letter and
contact information for three references electronically to:
www.lsuhsc.edu/Administration/hrm/CareerOpportunities/Home/Detail/1832.

The second position is to study cholinergic contributions to hippocampal
information processing in close collaboration with electrophysiologist
Sonia Gasparini. The successful candidate will construct a
morphologically and biophysically realistic model of a hippocampal CA1
pyramidal neuron to explain the observed frequency selectivity of
different dendritic regions for slow versus fast gamma band inputs. Some
network modeling will also be required for the project.

Qualified candidates may submit resume along with cover letter and contact
information for three references electronically to:
www.lsuhsc.edu/Administration/hrm/CareerOpportunities/Home/Detail/1821

The primary duties will involve linear and non-linear analyses, writing
code, calibrating single neuron models, and generating predictions that
lead to additional experiments. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in
Neuroscience, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a
related field of study. The ideal candidate would have experience with
the simulation package NEURON and some knowledge of the basal ganglia
for the first position and of the hippocampus for the second position.
Familiarity with nonlinear dynamics, signal processing, and coding in
C and or python in a Linux environment is also desirable.

LSUHSC is an Equal Opportunity Employer for females, minorities,
individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.

Date: Tue, Nov 28, 2017 at 8:27 PM
Subject: Postdoc Position: Ecological Modeling, RMIT U, Australia

Postdoctoral Fellow at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia)

We are looking for a full-time postdoctoral fellow to work on an ARC
funded project that deals with ecological modelling. The project will
continue for one year over 2018. The applicant should be highly
motivated, have a good mathematics/statistics background as well as a
strong interest in ecology and biology (and/or possibly epidemiology).
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience with modern
spatial statistics. The project is being run at RMIT University
(Melbourne, Australia), led by CI’s Yan Wang, Ascelin Gordon, and
support from Lewi Stone and Robert Dorazio.

Project Summary:
This project will provide innovative new spatial modelling tools to
improve our understanding of species distributions. Broadly speaking,
the successful candidate together with the CI’s will be developing a
general framework for extending species distribution models to deal
with multiple species, incorporating both their interactions as well
as surveillance errors in detection. This is a loose guideline; there
are also possibilities for pursuing work on related research topics,
possibly including network and epidemiological modelling

Applicants should send full CV’s (plus the names of three potential
referees) to Dr. Yan Wang yan.wang@rmit.edu.au.
