The Society of Mathematical Biology is now accepting nominations for
the Society prizes through March 31st, 2018. The details of the prizes
are located at the website: www.smb.org/society-prizes/.
Society members are encouraged to nominate candidates by submitting
the required materials in PDF format to the Society Secretary Dr. Ping
Ye (E-mail: ping.ye@sdstate.edu). The nominator must submit:
– Contact information for the nominators and nominee,
– A letter (no more than 4 pages) describing the nominee’s
qualifications and commenting on the nominee’s scientific contributions
for the society award,
– The nominee’s curriculum vitae, including all publications, and
– Two supporting letters.
Nominees may be affiliated with non-academic institutions, however,
please note that Society membership is a requirement for the
nominator, and nominee.

Subject: Helsinki Summer School: Math Ecology & Evolution 2018
We are glad to invite applications to the 2018 edition of The Helsinki
Summer School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution, an EMS-ESMTB
School in Applied Mathematics. The school will be held between 19 and
26 August 2018 in Turku, Finland, and will be part of the EMS Year of
Mathematical Biology: euro-math-soc.eu/year-mathematical-biology-2018
The core program consists of five series of lectures:
– Karl Sigmund (University of Vienna): Evolutionary game theory
– Odo Diekmann (Utrecht University): Renewal equations in population
biology
– Sebastian Schreiber (University of California, Davis): Coexistence in
variable environments
– Ellen Baake (University of Bielefeld): Probabilistic models and
ancestral processes in population genetics
– Mick Roberts (Massey University of New Zealand): Ecology of infectious
diseases
All young researchers working in mathematical ecology can apply from
all countries, especially from Europe and the Mediterranean. The school
is aimed at graduate students of mathematics, but we also welcome
students of biology with sufficient background in mathematics, as well
as advanced undergraduates and postdocs.

MURPHYS-HSFS-2018: Registration is open

Centre de Recerca Matemàtica, Barcelona, and the Collaborative Research
Center 910, Berlin, are pleased to announce the joint multidisciplinary
workshop MURPHYS-HSFS-2018. The workshop, devoted to mathematical theory
and applications of the multiscale systems, systems with hysteresis and
current trends in the dynamical systems theory, will take place at the
Centre de Recerca Matemàtica, in a beautiful suburb of Barcelona.
MURPHYS-HSFS-2018 workshop is the 9th workshop that continues a series
of biennial meetings focuses on multiple scale phenomena, singular
perturbations, phase transitions, hysteresis phenomena, nonlinear
systems in general, self-organizing systems, switched and multistable
systems, periodic orbits and bifurcation theory, piecewise differential
equations, experimental dynamical systems, open problems in dynamical
systems theory, and applications of the above mentioned to physical,
chemical, biological and economical sciences, engineering and medicine.
New areas of application are particularly welcome.
The participation of young scientists and in particular post-docs as
well as PhD and post-graduate students is strongly encouraged. The
reduced registration fees are applied to students.
Publications: Workshop proceedings and extended abstracts will be
published.

Subject: Postdoc Position: Evolutionary Theory, Queen’s U
I am recruiting a postdoc for a 2-year fellowship, to develop models
and theory for life history evolution in size-structured populations.
The position is joint with Dustin Marshall’s group at Monash
University and provides an excellent opportunity to develop theory
jointly with empiricists working on the same questions. The successful
applicant will be based at Queen’s University in Kingston Canada but
will also spend time at Monash University in Melbourne Australia.
Salary for the position is very competitive and research funds will
also be provided for the candidate to use at their discretion for
conference attendance etc.
There is no formal application deadline or start date but we are
hoping to find someone sooner rather than later.

Two Postdoctoral Researcher positions are available in the computational
neuroscience lab of Carmen Canavier (email ccanav@lsuhsc.edu with
questions) in the School of Medicine, Department of Cell Biology and
Anatomy at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
The first position is to study the dynamic diversity of midbrain
dopamine neurons in close collaboration with electrophysiologist Jochen
Roeper at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. The successful
candidate will construct morphologically and biophysically realistic
models of distinct subpopulations of dopamine neurons to account for
experimentally observed differences in their bursting and pacemaking
dynamics. These simulations will require in some cases incorporation of
stochastic channel models and second messenger cascades.

The second position is to study cholinergic contributions to hippocampal
information processing in close collaboration with electrophysiologist
Sonia Gasparini. The successful candidate will construct a
morphologically and biophysically realistic model of a hippocampal CA1
pyramidal neuron to explain the observed frequency selectivity of
different dendritic regions for slow versus fast gamma band inputs. Some
network modeling will also be required for the project.

The primary duties will involve linear and non-linear analyses, writing
code, calibrating single neuron models, and generating predictions that
lead to additional experiments. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in
Neuroscience, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a
related field of study. The ideal candidate would have experience with
the simulation package NEURON and some knowledge of the basal ganglia
for the first position and of the hippocampus for the second position.
Familiarity with nonlinear dynamics, signal processing, and coding in
C and or python in a Linux environment is also desirable.

Postdoctoral Fellow at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia)
We are looking for a full-time postdoctoral fellow to work on an ARC
funded project that deals with ecological modelling. The project will
continue for one year over 2018. The applicant should be highly
motivated, have a good mathematics/statistics background as well as a
strong interest in ecology and biology (and/or possibly epidemiology).
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience with modern
spatial statistics. The project is being run at RMIT University
(Melbourne, Australia), led by CI’s Yan Wang, Ascelin Gordon, and
support from Lewi Stone and Robert Dorazio.
Project Summary:
This project will provide innovative new spatial modelling tools to
improve our understanding of species distributions. Broadly speaking,
the successful candidate together with the CI’s will be developing a
general framework for extending species distribution models to deal
with multiple species, incorporating both their interactions as well
as surveillance errors in detection. This is a loose guideline; there
are also possibilities for pursuing work on related research topics,
possibly including network and epidemiological modelling
