Subject: SMB2018 Photo Competition

To all future SMB2018 participants,

We are running a photo competition to help promote SMB2018 worldwide.
The competition is simple: take a photo of yourself holding the
Official SMB2018 Competition Poster (found on our website:
conferences.science.unsw.edu.au/SMB2018/comp.html) and submit
your entry to: SMB2018Competition@gmail.com by January next year.
There are lots of prizes to be won including the SMB2018 Jumper and
lots of University of Sydney merchandise (oh and don’t forget the
glory and fame).

We look forward to seeing all your entries soon!

Warm Regards
The SMB2018 Competition Committee

The 9th Swedish Meeting on Mathematics in Biology will be held
December 7-8 at Mälardalen University, Sweden.

The meeting will adhere to the structure of previous years, i.e. two
mini courses (2×50 min) on selected topics in theoretical/mathematical
biology followed by contributed talks and poster presentations by
participants. This year’s mini-courses will be given by Hélène Morlon
from the Institut de Biologie de l’Ecole Normale Supeìrieure, and
David Sumpter from Uppsala University.

For further information about the meeting and instructions on how to
register, please see

From: William Holmes <william.holmes@vanderbilt.edu>
Date: Fri, Oct 27, 2017 at 11:22 AM
Subject: Postdoc Position: Math Biology, Vanderbilt U

The Holmes lab at Vanderbilt is looking for a talented and motivated
mathematician, physicist, or quantitative scientist with experience
with mathematical modelling, analysis, and simulation of spatial and/
or stochastic systems. This fellow would work in a collaborative group
on a number of projects, most centrally on a project to quantify the
robustness, evolution, and design of complex spatially signaling
regulatory networks. The goal of this project is to develop new
mathematical and computational tools to asses the properties of complex
spatial signaling systems that regulate cellular functions and
investigate the general design principles of those systems. While this
search is primarily associated with this project, Vanderbilt has a
large, vibrant biomedical sciences community with ample opportunities
for new collaborations and projects. Additional positions are possible
and exceptional candidates are encouraged to apply. All qualified
applicants are encouraged to apply, including women, African Americans,
Hispanics and other minorities.

Qualifications:
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, computer
science, engineering, or a related discipline. The following skills
are strongly desired.

REQUIRED
1) A PhD in mathematics, physics, or related discipline with an
applied mathematics / computing background.
2) Experience with numerical simulation of ODE’s/PDE’s (preferably in
Matlab, though not required).
3) Analysis of spatial pattern formation.

DESIRED
1) A background in mathematical biology, quantitive biology,
biophysics, or related work.
2) Experience with bifurcation analysis of systems of ODEs and/or PDEs.
Additional Information: The appointment can start as early as Winter
2018. The appointment is for one-year. Renewal for a second year is
contingent on availability of funds, satisfactory performance,
acceptable progress in carrying out the assigned duties, and mutual
agreement. Salary is commensurate with experience.

To Apply: Please submit a cover letter including a brief statement of
career goals, curriculum vitae, one example publication / manuscript,
and contact information of three references. Apply to Dr. William
Holmes (william.holmes@vanderbilt.edu). Review of applications will
begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Holmes directly expressing
interest while formal application materials are compiled.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until
the position is filled.

Subject: Postdoc Position: Math Biology/Statistics, U of Nottingham

We are seeking a modelling postdoc to work with us on our BBSRC-funded
“4D plant” project. The goal of the project is to understand the
interplay between wind forcing, plant movement and photosynthesis,
ultimately to improve cereal crop yields. The focus of the post is on
developing mechanical and data-driven models of moving plants, and
models of the consequent light dynamics within a canopy.

and please feel free to direct any informal enquiries to Simon Preston
(simon.preston@nottingham.ac.uk) or Oliver Jensen
