Subject: SMB Outreach Rep.: USA Science & Engineering Festival, Apr 7-8

The Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB) has an open call for
applications to serve as the SMB outreach representative at the 2018 USA
Science and Engineering Festival! The successful applicant will design
and host an outreach activity in the SMB table at the USA Science &
Engineering Festival, April 7-8, 2018 in Washington DC.

The ideal outreach project explores underlying concepts and issues in
mathematical biology, rather than just providing information, and
includes effective ways to engage with students and teachers. In 2014,
graduate student Andrew Basinski designed a set of games based on the
behavior of ants to illustrate the quantitative methods we use to make
sense of these hypnotically fascinating little creatures. See

graduate student Katrina Johnson used giant legos to illustrate signal
transduction in cells (You kind of have to see it at
http://smb.org/publications/SMBnet/pubs/ScienceEngineeringFestitval_SMBnewsletter.pdf.)

The designer of the selected project will receive funding for materials
and travel expenses to Washington DC for this event. The SMB Board of
Directors will line up local SMB members to help at the event.

Applications should be no more than two pages, and include
a) a description of outreach project and the core ideas it will include,
b) how it will be implemented to reach and involve a wide audience,
c) a simple assessment plan to evaluate what participants learned,
d) how the applicant is qualified to represent SMB and why they would
like to pursue this project,
e) A brief budget for project design and materials.

for the 2018 USA Science & Engineering Festival is November 1, 2017.

Subject: Winter School: ...Models in Neuroscience, Dec 11-15, France

We are glad to announce that from the 11th to the 15th of December 2017
will take place a Winter School on Deterministic and Stochastic Models
in Neuroscience at the Institut de Mathématiques de Toulouse in France.

The main objective of this event is to organise a winter school around
stochastic and deterministic models arising in neuroscience by providing
a series of lectures given by internationally renown speakers for a
broad audience (graduate students, PhD students, post doctorates,
researchers and professors) along with specific research talks. This
winter school will showcase some recent and ongoing modeling problems in
neuroscience with a strong emphasis on the stochastic and deterministic
methods developed to treat them. There will be two lectures dedicated to
stochastic methods and two for deterministic ones. The research talks
will complement and enlarge these courses with for example topics on
neural field equations, numerical methods or kinetic models of neuronal

Please note that there will be financial support for a selected number

Subject: Sep 1 Deadline: Requests for Support from NIMBioS

The September 1, 2017 deadline for requests for support for Working
Groups and Investigative Workshops at the National Institute for
Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) is fast approaching. All
areas of research at the interface of biology and mathematics will be
considered, and activities will be scheduled through summer 2019.
Potential organizers of activities in areas of molecular biology, cell
biology, network biology, immunology and systems biology are
particularly encouraged to submit requests for support of Working Groups
or Investigative Workshops.

NIMBioS, located at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, is an
NSF-sponsored initiative to foster interdisciplinary research at the
interface between mathematical and biological sciences. The institute's
mission is to cultivate cross-disciplinary approaches in mathematical
biology and to develop a cadre of researchers who address fundamental
and applied biological problems in creative ways. Additional support for

Subject: Sep 25 Deadline: Stoichiometric Ecotoxicology Workshop, NIMBioS

The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis
(NIMBioS) is now accepting applications for its Investigative Workshop,
"Stoichiometric Ecotoxicology," to be held January 17-19, 2018, at
NIMBioS.

For information about the workshop and a link to the online application

Participation in NIMBioS workshops is by application only. Individuals
with a strong interest in the topic are encouraged to apply, and
successful applicants will be notified within two weeks after the

program to enhance the research program of the entire life sciences
enterprise at Michigan.

The Michigan Life Sciences Fellows program aims not just to train the
next generation of scientists, but the next generation of scientific
leaders. The Michigan Life Sciences Fellows program provides additional
salary and financial resources, along with flexibility and freedom to
pursue research ideas, creating a unique multidisciplinary community of
scholars and providing mentorship focused on nurturing and launching
truly innovative scientists into groundbreaking careers.  Applicant will
be selected by a committee and then matched to a laboratory or research
group at Medical School, the College of Pharmacy, and College of
Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Life Sciences Institute at
the University of Michigan,

A few key points:
-The application deadline is Oct 16, 2017
-Fellows are appointed for a 12-month period, with the expectation the
appointment will be renewed each year for three years.
-The fellowship includes an annual stipend of $60,000, $25,000 toward
independent research, and a $2,000 annual travel stipend.
-Fellows can negotiate their starting dates between March and June 2018.

A post-doctoral research positions in applied statistics is available at
the Department of Mathematics, Aarhus University, Denmark, in the
Applied Statistics Laboratory. The position is for one year with the
possibility to be extended.

Job description:
You will work at the Applied Statistics Laboratory at the Department of
Mathematics with:
-Development or improvement of new statistical methods directed at or
inspired by concrete applications in life and environmental sciences
-Statistical consultation and participation in research projects in
several other departments of the Faculty of Science and Technology
-Contribution to teaching statistics for non-statisticians
-Co-supervision of non-statisticians in statistical matters

The candidates we are seeking at the Applied Statistics Laboratory are
expected to provide statistical assistance and participate in a range of
research projects (ideally in different research groups or involving
different departments at the Faculty of Science and Technology), and, in
parallel, to work in methodological / theoretical developments in
statistical themes that are relevant to these research projects. The
Applied Statistics Laboratory currently has lines of research in the
following topics: extensions of generalized linear models of high
complexity, highly complex graphical models, extensions of classical
survival/event-history analysis, spatial statistics and incompletely
observed data, but other research lines will certainly be relevant too.
The Applied Statistical Laboratory is a new research group,
supplementing the strong theoretical statistics and probability research
groups at the Department of Mathematics; the postdoc position will also
benefit from the rich academic environment in theoretical statistics and
mathematical aspects of statistics.

Required qualifications and selection criteria:
-PhD in statistics or a close related field
-Strong background in statistics and mathematics (essential)
-Fluency in spoken and written English

You should have interest in applied statistics and research in
statistical methodological developments inspired by applications in life
and environmental sciences.

Developmental Biology
