Subject: Call for participation in a survey on appointment procedures at universities

Dear Colleagues,

As part of the research project "The many faces of academic success" at the
Technical University of Munich (funded by the German Federal Ministry of
Education and Research, BMBF), we are conducting a survey on appointment
procedures at universities. The purpose of the survey is to contribute to a
more comprehensive understanding of appointment decisions. In particular, we
are interested in the question of whether there are similarities and
differences in appointment preferences among countries and scientific fields
as well as between junior and senior scholars.

In the course of the survey, you will take part in a hypothetical appointment
procedure for a tenured professorship. You assume the role of a member of an
appointment committee and state your preferences for different candidates.
Participation in the survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Please,
click on the following link to access the survey (or copy the link into your
browser): https://faces.sawtoothsoftware.com

We would greatly appreciate it if you could take part in our survey and
express your personal opinion on appointment procedures at universities. All
participants have the opportunity to win an Apple Watch Series 2 or a pair of
Bose QuietControl 30 wireless headphones. In addition, we will be happy to
send you a summary of the results of the survey. Of course, the collected data
will be treated in strict confidence and used only for research purposes.

If you have any questions about the survey or comments, please do not hesitate
to contact us (laura.graf@tum.de).

Best regards, and thank you very much in advance for your help,
Laura Graf, Jutta Stumpf-Wollersheim, Isabell M. Welpe

From: Jane White <K.A.J.White@bath.ac.uk>

Subject: PhD position: Mathematical modelling of pesticide absorption, Bath

Pesticide usage remains globally widespread despite concerns over
environmental and health impacts and so understanding how to make effective
products that minimise negative impact is a significant and important problem.
There are many aspects to the problem. One that may not be immediately obvious
is how to create pesticide products that are highly effective on the
agricultural crop but which are safe to be handled by workers. For example,
pesticide sprays need to be developed so that they penetrate leaf surfaces
effectively but are not well absorbed into the skin.

This project is about creating and analysing a series of mathematical models
that can be used to compare and contrast pesticide absorption through leaf
surfaces and human skin and to begin to understand how different pesticide
components contribute to the optimal solution of high leaf, but negligible
skin, penetration. Working with colleagues from Syngenta means that there will
be data available to estimate model parameters and to validate the model
outputs.

The project is closely linked to the SAMBa CDT
(http://www.bath.ac.uk/math-sci/postgraduate/samba) and the successful student
will have access to the wide range of opportunities offered within that CDT
and, more widely, within the Department of Mathematical Sciences. There will
be many opportunities to participate in research workshops, attend conferences
and to meet with colleagues from Syngenta to discuss progress with the project.

Informal enquiries: Dr K A Jane White (lead supervisor) k.a.j.white@bath.ac.uk
Anticipated start date: 2 October 2017.

Applicants should apply via the University of Bath's online application form
choosing the PhD programme in Mathematical Sciences. More information on how
to apply may be found here:
http://www.bath.ac.uk/science/graduate-school/research-programmes/how-to-apply/

Early application is strongly recommended as the position will be filled once
a suitable candidate is found.

Funding Notes: The successful candidate will receive a studentship covering
Home/EU tuition fees, an tax-free stipend at the RCUK rate (£14,553 per annum,
2017-18 rate) and a training support fee of £1,000 per annum for a period of
up to 4 years.
Note: Only UK and EU applicants are eligible for the studentship; unfortunately,
applicants who are classed as Overseas for fee-paying purposes are NOT
eligible for the funding.

Subject: PhD position: Mathematical modeling of drug action in malaria, UNSW

Widespread use of antimalarial drugs has significantly reduced deaths and
infections from malaria over the last decade. However, resistance to most
common antimalarial drugs threatens this progress. This project involves
mathematical modeling of clinical and experimental data on parasite dynamics
after treatment with antimalarial drugs. This will provide insight into the
action of anti-malarial agents - how drugs affect parasite replication, and
how the human host removes parasites from circulation. This will be used to
predict the effects of novel drugs and drug combinations in controlling
malaria infection.

From: Reka Albert <rza1@psu.edu>
Date: Thu, Jun 22, 2017 at 7:57 PM
Subject: Postdoc: Systems biology of converging signal..., Penn State

We seek a postdoc to join a collaborative project between Prof. Reka Albert
(Physics) and Prof. Sally Assmann (Biology) at the Pennsylvania State
University. The project will integrate computational analysis (by graph
theoretical and dynamic modeling methods) and experimental investigation to
develop dynamic models of convergent signal transduction pathways in plant
biology. The specific setting will be plant guard cells, epidermal cells that
enclose microscopic pores, stomata, through which plants take up CO2 and,
inevitably, lose water. In response to the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA;
an indicator of drought and other stresses), and to elevated concentrations of
CO2 (the substrate for photosynthesis), complex signaling networks are
activated in guard cells that drive stomatal closure. The Albert and Assmann
groups have a strong track record of collaboration in this field (e.g. PLOS
Biol. 2006, PLOS Comp. Biol. 2014). The postdoctoral associate will build on
this foundation to construct a network model of guard cell ABA and CO2
signaling. (S)he will also develop graph theoretical and combinatorial logic
methods to describe convergent and overlapping directed networks, with
implications for the general phenomenon of cross-talk in biological systems.

The ideal candidate should have experience with network analysis and dynamic
modeling. Requirements include a Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, or other
quantitative science and experience with modeling biological systems. Due to
the collaborative nature of the project, the successful candidate will be an
excellent interdisciplinary communicator and team player.

Interested applicants should write to rza1@psu.edu and include a CV.

Subject: Postdoc: Viral and Bacterial Infection Modeling, Tennessee

Postdoctoral Research positions are available in the Department of Pediatrics
and the Institute for the Study of Host-Pathogen Systems at the University of
Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, TN. The successful
applicant will work with Dr. Amber Smith (https://www.ambersmithlab.com) to
develop and analyze mathematical models of the immune response and treatment
of respiratory viral and bacterial infections and coinfections. The Smith lab
is a combined dry/wet laboratory and has the unique ability to generate robust
data sets to train and validate the models and their predictions.

Postdocs will collaborate with computational biologists, virologists,
bacteriologists, immunologists, and clinicians within the Smith Lab, across
UTHSC, and at neighboring St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital. He/she will
develop and analyze dynamical infection models, use parameter estimation to
investigate experimental kinetic data, design new experiments, and generate
new hypotheses about infection biology.

From: Ruian Ke <rke2@ncsu.edu>
Date: Fri, Jun 23, 2017 at 3:55 AM
Subject: Postdoc: Multiscale modeling of viral infection, NC State

The Ke lab in the Department of Mathematics at North Carolina State University
(NCSU) seeks a post-doc fellow to work on multiscale models for virus
infection and novel therapeutic interventions. Currently, two focuses of the
lab are on influenza and HIV. For influenza, we are interested in developing
multiscale models to understand the functional organization of influenza
viruses and derive design principles for novel antiviral therapies. The
project will involve modeling the population and evolutionary dynamics of
influenza and novel therapies at the intracellular scale and the within-host
scale. The other research focus of the lab is on HIV latency and reversal. HIV
latently infected cell population is a major barrier to an HIV cure. We are
interested in developing mathematical models to understand the dynamics of HIV
latently infected cell population especially under novel intervention
strategies, such as latency reversal agents and/or immunotherapies. The
post-doc will work closely with theoreticians and experimentalists in
multidisciplinary teams to interpret data and estimate parameters from
datasets generated from collaborating labs. The position is available
immediately although the actual starting date is flexible.

To apply, please send a cover letter, a brief statement of research interests
and a CV to Ruian Ke (ruian_ke@ncsu.edu). We will review applications on a
rolling basis until the position is filled.
