We would like to announce the 3rd Maxwell Institute Graduate School on Evolution Equations, to be held at the ICMS from 15 to 17 November 2017.
This year the school will be at the interface of math biology, applied and numerical analysis. It will consist of 2 short courses by Jean-Frederic Gerbeau (Inria/Paris, on numerical analysis of fluid/structure interaction and the cardiovascular system, inverse problems and data assimilation) and Hans Othmer (Minnesota, on modeling, shape analysis and the boundary integral method in the context of cell movement).
The remainder of the programme will be completed by a variety of additional talks given by UK-wide senior and junior speakers. We also expect to hold an afternoon of talks by Ph.D. students and young postdocs.

The journal Molecular Based Mathematical Biology (MBMB) will publish a special issue entitled "Bio-molecular data modeling and mining". The purpose of this special issue is to create a medium for researchers from mathematical, computational and biological sciences and other related disciplines to report novel mathematical models, computational algorithms, and biological applications to the data mining, machine learning, knowledge discovery and pattern recognition from large-scale bio-molecular data of various types and dimensionalities, include but not limit to 1D sequence, 2D image, 3D volume and structure data.
MBMB (http://www.degruyter.com/view/j/mlbmb) is a recently established journal, whose aim is to promote the mathematical study and findings of biological structure, functions and dynamics at the molecular scale. Original papers and high-quality review articles on the aforementioned topics are solicited for this special issue.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research position in Mathematical Biology, based in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will work on a new research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), constructing a mathematical model for retinal haemorrhage following a traumatic brain injury, working with Dr Peter Stewart and the EPSRC SofTMech centre. The post is funded for 13 months in the first instance.
The project aims to understand the propagation and interaction of elastic jumps (shock waves) across networks of blood vessels at the rear of the eye following a sudden increase in intracranial pressure. The project will examine how the resulting large gradients in pressure can induce bursting of blood vessels, and hence retinal haemorrhage. Specifically, the job requires a PhD (or recently submitted or near completion) in mathematical biology along with an expert knowledge in fluid dynamics and continuum mechanics.

The position is linked to a research project on modelling tissue morphology using computational models for representing mechanical interactions between cells. The Departments of Mathematics and Biology invite applications at the level of Associate or Full Professor for the Calabi-Simons Chair in Mathematics and Biology. This is a permanent endowed chair for which we are seeking an exceptionally accomplished mathematical biologist, particularly in the fields of Probability Theory and Evolution. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Mathematics and Biology and conducting research in the field. The chair-holder will help build excellence in this field at Penn and strengthen links between the Mathematics and Biology departments. The Simons Foundation provides generous programmatic funds, which could support graduate students and postdoctoral fellows as well as seminars and conferences.
