From: Santiago Schnell <schnells@umich.edu> Date: Wed, Jan 4, 2017 at 4:15 PM Subject: Short Term Educational Program towards Digestive & Metabolic Physiology
The Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan is pleased to offer Summer Fellows under the Short Term Education Program towards Digestive and Metabolic Physiology to support undergraduate students from engineering, computational sciences, mathematics or other quantitative backgrounds to apply their expertise to research relevant to digestive and metabolic physiology and associated diseases.
Students currently enrolled at any degree granting university or college are eligible to apply, with preference give to those students interested in a career in research. Each student will be matched, based on their interests, to a laboratory led by a faculty member of the University of Michigan Medical School. This collection of laboratories is involved in nationally recognized research, in topics such as obesity and diabetes, endocrine and metabolic diseases, kidney and urologic diseases, nutrition and weight control.
The stipend for 2017 will be $4200, pre-tax, for twelve weeks of full-time work from May 30 to August 18. The start and end date of the fellowship may be change to accommodate overlap with academic year at home institution, if necessary. The laboratory hands-on research is completed with a weekly seminar series with presentations on responsible conduct of research, career advice and couching, and how loss of physiological regulation leads to digestive and metabolic diseases. There will be a research forum at the end of the summer in which fellows will present their work, as well as opportunities to attend research seminars throughout the summer.
Further details and application materials are available from the fellowship website: https://sites.google.com/a/umich.edu/step/home
The deadline for applications is February 3, 2017
This summer fellowship program is partially funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (Grant No. R25 DK088752)

From: William Holmes <william.holmes@vanderbilt.edu> Date: Mon, Jan 9, 2017 at 2:20 PM Subject: Postdoc: Mathematical Modeling & Simulation of Spatial/Stochastic ...
Position Type: Postdoctoral Fellow Start Date: 2017 (Negotiable) Faculty Advisor: Dr. William R. Holmes
Position Description:
The Theoretical Biophysics Lab led by Dr. William Holmes at Vanderbilt is looking for a talented and motivated quantitative scientist with experience in mathematical modeling and simulation of spatial and / or stochastic systems. This fellow would work in a collaborative group on a number of projects, most centrally, an NSF funded investigation of early mammalian embryonic development. The goal of this project is to use modeling to understand how stochasticity propagates in gene regulatory networks, how that noise influences spatial organization of the early embryo, and more generally how different developmental processes contribute to the construction of the first discernible structures in the pre-implantation embryo.
While this search is primarily associated with this project, additional positions are possible and exceptional candidates are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications: Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline. The following skills are sought.
REQUIRED
1) Experience with numerical simulation (preferably in Matlab, though not required). 2) Experience working with ordinary and partial differential equations. 3) Familiarity with stochastic simulation.
DESIRED
1) Experience with PDE simulation, particularly with a focus on calculating "Landscapes" for gene regulatory networks. 2) Stochastic simulation (SSA and related methods). 3) Spatial stochastic modeling using methods such as the sub-cellular element model or the cellular Potts model.
Additional Information: The start date is negotiable. The appointment can start as early as Winter 2017 and is initially for one-year. Renewal for subsequent years is contingent on satisfactory performance, acceptable progress in carrying out the assigned duties, availability of funds, and mutual agreement. Salary is commensurate with experience.
To Apply: Please submit a cover letter including a brief statement of career goals, past research, and why you are interested in this position. Additionally, please send a curriculum vitae and one example publication / manuscript. In your cover letter, list the name of three references. If you are short listed, I will ask that letters be provided. Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Holmes (william.holmes@vanderbilt.edu) directly expressing interest while formal application materials are being compiled.
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply, including women, African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
