There's no better time than now to join or renew your Society for
Mathematical Biology membership. Your membership renewal allows you access
to several career development resources and networking opportunities but
most importantly, you will be supporting the growth of mathematical biology
today and tomorrow.

Your 2017 membership will also give you the ability to have a voice in the
Society's activities. The Society for Mathematical Biology membership fees
are among the lowest for scientific societies. To join online go to

Subject: CAIMS Distinguished Lecture in Math Biology: Nov 30

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society Annual
Distinguished Lecture in Mathematical Biology is being delivered at UBC
Okanagan and online on Nov 30th, noon-1pm PST. The speaker is Professor
Michael Bonsall, Professor of Mathematical Biology at Oxford University, UK.
The title and abstract of his talk are given below. The link to attend his
lecture online is:

https://vidyoreplay.computecanada.ca/replay/webcastShow.html?key=yoSEJDHwtEtD919 .

Spatial ecology: the role of Allee effects and stochasticity on species
persistence

It is now well established that species persistence is enhanced by
considering broader spatial phenomena. In this talk I will explore some
recent work we have done on Allee effects and stochastic dynamics. I will
begin by introducing recent theoretical work, using integro-difference
approaches, to determine patch size dynamics for persistence before
discussing work on Allee effects in British butterfly populations. I will
then highlight, with some theoretical and empirical developments, recent
developments to understand stochastic dynamics using our bruchid beetle
metapopulation system. Throughout the talk I will aim to emphasize the
generality of our findings beyond the specific theoretical or empirical
system.
