Subject: Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards at the Scientific Interface

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI)
provide 500,000 USD over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training
and the first three years of faculty service. These awards are open to U.S.
and Canadian citizens or permanent residents as well as to U.S. temporary
residents.

The goal of the grants is to foster the early career development of
researchers who have transitioned or are transitioning from undergraduate
and/or graduate work in the physical/mathematical/computational sciences or
engineering into postdoctoral work in the biological sciences, and who are
dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. Scientific advances
such as genomics, quantitative structural biology, imaging techniques, and
modeling of complex systems have created opportunities for exciting research
careers at the interface between the physical/computational sciences and the
biological sciences. Tackling key problems in biology will require
scientists trained in areas such as chemistry, physics, applied mathematics,
computer science, and engineering.

The deadline for application is deadline September 1st, 2016. For more
details, please visit:
http://www.bwfund.org/grant-programs/interfaces-science/career-awards-scientific-interface

*NOTE CORRECTED DATE*

The goal of the one-day workshop "Multilayer and Interconnected Networks:
Epidemic Processes and Robustness" (MIN2016) is to bring together scientists
working on the topic of multilayer and interconnected networks. The speakers
will present their latest results and will carry out a discussion on the
state of the art and current open challenges for this topic. We hope the
meeting will provide an informal venue for encouraging interdisciplinary
communication.

The workshop will be celebrated at the Universitat of Girona, Catalonia
(Spain), June 8, 2016.

Confirmed speakers (in alphabetical order):

 * Marián Boguñá (Univ. de Barcelona)
 * Gregorio D?Agostino (ENEA, Italy)
 * Sergio Gómez (Univ. Rovira i Virgili)
 * Robert Kooij (TNO & Delft Univ. of Technology)
 * Yamir Moreno (Univ. de Zaragoza)
 * Romualdo Pastor-Satorras (Univ. Politècnica de Catalunya)
 * Faryad Sahneh (Kansas State University)
 * Caterina Scoglio (Kansas State University)
 * Igor van Gemert (SIM-CI, The Netherlands)

Attendance is free of cost but registration for audience members is required
for organisational purposes (lecture room, coffees, lunch).

Extended registration deadline: June 3, 2016.

MULTIPLE POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS IN DISEASE ECOLOGY
Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior; University of Minnesota

Our research group seeks to hire 2-3 motivated and conceptually driven
post-doctoral associates to work collaboratively using empirical and/or
theoretical approaches to test community ecology and behavioral ecology
theory in pathogen communities. This work will focus on, but not necessarily
be limited to
(i) investigating the role of vector behavior on pathogen dynamics,
(ii) testing the relevance of  resource competition and metacommunity theory
       to pathogen communities, and
(iii) investigating the interactions between disease and movement broadly.

The successful applicant will work within a collaborative research team of
faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students that includes
expertise in using mathematical, statistical, and empirical approaches in
behavioral, community, and disease ecology. We are particularly interested
in applicants with strong skills in mathematics, statistical and analytical
techniques, or molecular techniques relevant to the detection of
phytoviruses using qPCR or metagenomics techniques. Demonstration of
excellent writing skills are is an essential qualification for these
positions. The appointment is initially for one year, but may be renewed
annually. Starting date is negotiable and may begin as soon as possible.

Questions about this position should be addressed to Drs. Allison Shaw
(ashaw@umn.edu), Elizabeth Borer (borer@umn.edu), or Eric Seabloom
(seabloom@umn.edu).

Review of applications will begin 15 June 2016 and positions will remain
open until filled.

Apply for this position (Job Opening ID: 310245) via the University of
Minnesota Office of Human Resources website:
http://www1.umn.edu/ohr/employment/
