Biology are essential to the implementation of the Society's stated purpose
to promote the development and dissemination of research at the interface
between the mathematical and biological sciences.
The Society for Mathematical Biology is seeking nominations for:
- The President-Elect Office. The President-Elect will serve for a one year
at the closing of the Annual Business Meeting, held at the 2016 Annual
Meeting in Nottingham, United Kingdom. Then, The President-Elect
automatically becomes President for two years.

appointed at the closing of the Annual Business Meeting, held at the 2016
Annual Meeting in Nottingham, United Kingdom. Each Elected Member of the
Board serves a term of four years.
Society members interested in serving the Society for Mathematical Biology
in a leadership role of President-Elect or member of the Elected Board of
Directors must submit a CV and a nomination statement (300 words or less).
The statement should describe why you would be a valuable addition to the

*Using Math to Understand How Cells Talk to Each Other*
When cells need to communicate, they don't use cell phones. They can only
use chemical signals, and getting information out of a bunch of molecules is
not very easy. In fact, cell communication can turn into a game of
"telephone," where the original message gets more and more corrupted with
each step. We'll show mathematical equations and team simulations that help
explain how cells manage to send signals and transmit information over long
distances. And we'll collect data from some simulation games to see whether
we can be as smart as cells.

Subject: AIBS Newsletter: Building a More Networked System for Communicating
about Natural History Collections
Dear AIBS Members and Friends,
The American Institute of Biological Sciences is leading a national
initiative - the Biodiversity Collections Network - with the Natural Science
Collections Alliance and the Society for the Preservation of Natural History
Collections. The Biodiversity Collections Network is working to build a
sustainable community of practice that is able to advance national goals
related to the digitization of biological specimens and their associated
data.
Yesterday, the Biodiversity Collections Network released a report, "Building
a More Networked System for Communicating about Natural History Collections."
This report includes overarching recommendations for how the biodiversity
sciences community can improve communication within the community and with
key decision-makers. I invite you to read this important report.
If you would like to contribute to an on-going effort to refine and
implement these recommendations, I encourage you to apply to participate in
the volunteer Collections Communications Working Group that is being
established by the Biodiversity Collections Network. For more information,
Sincerely,
Robert Gropp, Ph.D.
Interim Co-Executive Director
