The seventh international workshop on Statistical Analysis of Neural Data
(SAND7) will take place May 27-29, 2015, in Pittsburgh, PA.

computational methods encourage young researchers, including graduate
students, to present their work; and expose young researchers to important
challenges and opportunities in this interdisciplinary domain, while
providing a small meeting atmosphere to facilitate the interaction of
young researchers with senior colleagues.

Subject: MSc Position: Mathematical Medicine and Biology, U of Nottingham
The MSc in Mathematical Medicine and Biology at the University of
Nottingham is open for applications to start in September 2015.
The MSc in Mathematical Medicine and Biology prepares students to pursue
successful careers in either academia or industry. As such, it provides an
excellent first step towards embarking on a PhD in Mathematical Biology or
towards working for companies in areas like drug development, healthcare,
or sustainable agriculture.
The programme provides training in advanced mathematical techniques
including partial differential equations and stochastic processes.
Moreover, it exposes students to a broad variety of biological and medical
applications, ranging from subcellular processes such as gene regulation
to organ-level dynamics. In particular the MSc offers practical experience
in modelling dynamics in neuroscience, cardiac dynamics, cancer,
inflammation and plants. Overall the MSc in Mathematical Medicine and
Biology is an interdisciplinary postgraduate degree that combines exciting
mathematical research areas with a wide range of practically relevant
biological and medical questions.
The programme currently offers 5 taught modules, which is followed by a
dissertation. During the taught portion of the course students are
introduced to key modelling concepts and numerical approaches in
Mathematical Biology. In addition, advanced mathematical techniques are
covered that allow students to successfully engage with today's challenges
in biology and medicine. The dissertation provides students with an
exciting opportunity to study a specific topic in more detail. Here,
the wide range of interests and expertise within the research group of
Mathematical Medicine and Biology at the University of Nottingham give
students a great experience with hands-on research.

Subject: Ph.D. Position: Ecology, U of New Brunswick
The Houlahan Lab is looking for a Ph.D. student with very strong
quantitative skills and an interest in answering fundamental ecological
questions that can be addressed with multi-year, -site, -species datasets.
All applicants should have some experience in ONE of GLMM's, Bayesian
modeling, machine learning and/or structural equation models and a
commitment to learning more. It would be an advantage to have some
experience programming in R or Python.
Our lab focuses on using large datasets to address fundamental ecological
questions and whole-system pond experiments to address both applied and
fundamental ecological questions. We have addressed questions related to
interspecific competition and diversity-stability relationships but are
happy to discuss any interesting projects.
We would be just as happy with a computer science or math student with an
interest in ecology as an ecology student with interests in computer
science math or statistics. An M.Sc. is preferable but exceptionally
strong students without an M. Sc. will be considered.
UNB Saint John is one of two campuses associated with the University of
New Brunswick. The Biology department is small but dynamic with ~50
graduate students and strengths in marine ecology and eco-toxicology. The
Houlahan lab is part of the Canadian Rivers Institute and the successful
candidate would have access to the CRI state-of-the art laboratory
facilities.

Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships - Mathematics for A Sustainable Society
The University of Nottingham is seeking PhD applications to this doctoral
training centre, which aims to tackle the ongoing global problems of food
shortages, water scarcity and insufficient clean energy by using
mathematics to help understand and optimise resource use through
predictive modelling, statistical analysis and uncertainty quantification.
A number of the projects focus on biological aspects of resource
sustainability, including plant growth, anti-microbial resistance in
agriculture, and bio-energy.
The scholarships are for four years and will cover PhD tuition fees for
UK/EU students, plus a tax-free stipend of £13,863 per annum(2014/15 rate).
At the end of their PhD, Leverhulme Doctoral Scholars will be eligible to
apply for an additional one-year post-doctoral prize, funded by The
University of Nottingham, to help establish their independent research

Subject: Postdoc Position: Quantitative Geography, Stony Brook U
A postdoctoral position will be available, starting on or after July 1,
2015, in Dr. Heather Lynch's lab in the Department of Ecology & Evolution
at Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY. This post-doc will be part of a
project titled: "The use of Quantitative Geography to Predict Population
Tipping Points for Colonial Seabirds"; this postdoctoral researcher will
be one member of a team of researchers working to integrate satellite
imagery with statistical and mathematical models of seabird colony
formation. The primary responsibility of this position is the development
of mathematical models for spatial pattern formation in penguin colonies;
additional mathematical or statistical modeling studies relevant to
penguin population dynamics may be pursued depending on interest. Ideal
applicants will have completed their Ph.D. in applied mathematics, physics,
or mathematical biology; prior experience with the mathematics of biological
or ecological systems ideal but not required. This position will require
close collaboration with a graduate student and another post-doc working on
remote sensing, as well as mentorship of undergraduate and high school
researchers, so strong communication skills with non-mathematicians are
essential. Members of groups under-represented in applied mathematics are
