Subject: Workshop: Computational and Analytical Aspects ..., RI, July 13-17

Topical Workshop: Computational and Analytical Aspects of Image
Reconstruction (July 13-17, 2015), Institute for Computational and
Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), Providence, RI.

To Apply: http://icerm.brown.edu/topical_workshops/tw15-2-caair/

The mathematical study of image reconstruction problems can have a huge
impact on human life. More efficient mathematical algorithms for X-ray
tomography and more accurate mathematical models in seismic or hybrid
imaging can lead to better imaging devices in fields such as medicine and
remote sensing. Developing the underlying mathematics, including the
analysis of reconstruction stability, regularization, singularity
characterization, and efficient algorithms, may lead to fewer false
positives in fields such as medical, seismic and radar imaging.

This topical workshop will bring together international experts working in
computational and analytical aspects of image reconstruction (including
but not limited to electron-microscope tomography, hybrid imaging, radar
and sonar, full waveform inversion of seismic imaging and X-ray CT) as
well as postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. There will be multiple
introductory-level talks for early-career researchers and non-specialists
in the area on both the mathematics involved and the scientific and
industrial applications. Speakers and participants from industry will be
included to strengthen the practical aspects of the workshop.

Variability Into a Mountain Pine Beetle Phenology Model.

Utah State University (USU) and the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain
Research Station (RMRS) in Logan, UT seek a motivated student to join our
group examining the influence of climate change on mountain pine beetle
dynamics.

Applications from students with interests in mathematical biology,
entomology and/or forest ecology are encouraged to apply. The candidate
student would pursue a degree in either biology, wildland resources,
mathematics, or statistics depending on background and career goals;
multi-disciplinary coursework and mentoring is envisioned. The student
will receive a competitive 12-month stipend and travel support; full
tuition waiver is available for students completing a Masters thesis.
Interested applicants should send an email to Dr. Barbara Bentz

Subject: Postdoc Position: Theoretical Microbial Ecology, Michigan State U

Two postdoctoral positions are available in the Klausmeier lab at Michigan
State University's Kellogg Biological Station to develop trait-based
models for complex microbial communities. We will study the evolution and
ecology of syntrophic networks and competition in variable environments,
and develop computational tools for trait-based modeling. Experience with
ecological and evolutionary modeling, adaptive dynamics, stochastic spatial
simulations, bifurcation theory, and Mathematica and background in
microbial ecology are beneficial but not required.

Both positions are for one year initially, renewable for a second year
depending on performance and continued funding. Start date is as soon as
possible after June 1, 2015. Interested applicants should email a CV, a
brief statement of research interests and accomplishments, and the names
and contact information of two references to Christopher Klausmeier
(klausme1@msu.edu). Review of applications will begin May 1 and continue
until filled.

See <http://preston.kbs.msu.edu> and <http://www.kbs.msu.edu> for more
info on the lab and KBS, and email if you have questions.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking to expand its expertise
in Statistical Genomics. In particular, the successful applicants will
contribute to the research agenda of the school around Statistical Genomics
which is under the broad leadership of Professor D Balding. Two
appointments may be made to suitable candidates. The successful applicants
are expected to undertake methodological research and supervise research
students in the development and application of cutting-edge statistical
methods for applications in the life sciences, preferably in statistical
genetics/genomics or related areas of computational biology. He/she should
have a commitment to teaching and will be expected to teach statistics
subjects to life sciences students, as well as to students of mathematics
and statistics.

The University of Melbourne provides a wide range of opportunities for
exciting research collaboration. The Parkville precinct has the greatest
concentration of biological and medical research in Australia, and among
the greatest internationally. The recent appointment of Prof David Balding
to a joint position between Mathematics/Statistics and Biosciences and the
establishment of a new Centre for Systems Genomics, expected to be fully
operational by the end of 2015, form part of new initiatives to strengthen
the involvement of statisticians in the advances being made in genomics
and computational biology, that the successful applicant will have the
opportunity to contribute to and benefit from. Several new appointments
have also strengthened the Mathematical and Computational Biology research
group within the School, providing further opportunities for collaboration
and cross-fertilisation of research ideas.
