Subject: UK Multiscale Biology Network - Springboard meeting, June 1

UK Multiscale Biology Network-Springboard meeting, 1 June 2015, Nottingham.

The BBSRC has recently funded the UK Multiscale Biology network, motivated
by BBSRC strategic discussions which identified 'Multi-Scale Biology'(MSB)
as a key area of research and capability that will be at the forefront of
bioscience research over the next 5-10 years. The network will aim to:
* facilitate the exploitation of areas of synergy between researchers
across the UK in the broad area of multi-scale biology (MSB);
* raise awareness of the benefits of MSB;
* identify areas that are most ready for MSB and horizon scan for emerging
areas;
* and explore opportunities for MSB collaboration within Europe and
further afield.

Confirmed keynote speakers:
- James Briscoe: Crick Institute, http://crick.ac.uk/research/a-z-researchers/researchers-a-c/james-briscoe/
Neural tube development, organisation from the cellular to the tissue scale
- Carole Goble: Manchester, http://www.manchester.ac.uk/research/Carole.goble/
Data intensive in silico science, data and model management for Systems
Biology
There will be a selection of shorter invited talks, discussion sessions to
set the agenda for future MSB Network activities, and an opportunity to
present posters.

Start: 10am refreshments for first session at 10:30
Close: 4:30pm

Refreshments and lunch will be provided. There is no registration fee, and
the MSB Network can provide a contribution to travel costs of up to £50
each for up to 40 attendees.
If you would like to attend the springboard meeting, please email
Daisy.Carter@nottingham.ac.uk, indicating
1) any special dietary requirements,
2) whether or not you would like to present a poster,
3) whether you request a contribution to your travel.

Subject: Symposium: Complex networks in Ecology, Spain, June 1

The announcement of the NetSci 2015 Satellite entitled 'Complex networks
in Ecology (II)', to be held on June, 1 in Zaragoza, Spain.

The aim of the symposium is to create a space for exchanging
state-of-the-art results and current developments of network theory applied
to ecological systems, and the implications in terms of resilience and
vulnerability that realistic population dynamics may impose on those
networked systems. Particular attention will be devoted to recent
developments in network theory applied to ecological systems, such as
multiplexed or multilayered ecological networks, the temporal assembly and
evolution of food-webs or mutualistic networks, as well as to the
implications of those studies on new strategies for assessing and
improving ecosystem recovery after different kinds of perturbations.

Invited speakers:

- Sonia Kefi, Institut des Sciences de l'Evolution, Montpellier, France
- Hugo Saiz, Université de Rennes 1, France
- Luis J. Gilarranz, Biological Center of Doñana, Spanish Council for
Scientific Research
- Marta Sales-Pardo, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona

The program will include contributed talks selected from abstract
submission. The deadline for abstract submission is May 1, 2015.
Notification of acceptance will be on May, 7.

of open problems suggested by the participants. During the week
participants will work in groups and develop these open problems towards
concrete research questions and a research plan.

Lecturers:
Michio Kondoh,
Andrea Lancichinetti,
Julia Poncela,
Jose Javier Ramasco.

Registration:
1. A short CV (max 2 pages)
2. An open problem (max 500 words).
3. Contact information: Full name, affiliation, email, cell-phone, need
for financial support (yes/no), food allergies and preferences (vegan,

From: Alex Perkins <taperkins@nd.edu>
Date: Wed, Apr 1, 2015 at 11:22 PM
Subject: Postdoc Position: Dengue Simulation Modeling at U of Notre Dame

A candidate for a postdoctoral research position is sought for the Perkins
Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre
Dame. Research will focus on the development, validation, and application
of individual-based models of dengue transmission with a high degree of
detail and realism at the relatively fine spatial scales that characterize
dengue transmission. This modeling work will be performed in conjunction
with data sets and field studies from dengue-endemic areas and will focus
on questions of highly applied significance related to the evaluation and
deployment of novel interventions.

Desirable qualities of candidates include (1) a Ph.D. in Mathematics or
Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Computer
Science, or another relevant field; (2) strong programming and software
development skills, preferably in C++ and R; (3) experience conducting
applied research based on mathematical models and simulations; (4) and
background and/or interest in epidemiology and infectious disease
dynamics.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with skills and experience,
benefits will be provided, and support is available for travel to
conferences and to visit field sites as appropriate. Funding is also
available to provide computer programming support through Notre Dame's
Center for Research Computing, which has a strong track record in
individual-based modeling of vector-borne disease transmission.

For further information, please email Alex Perkins (taperkins@nd.edu)
with a statement of interest, a CV, and the names of and contact
information for three references. Applications will be considered until
the position is filled, but for priority consideration an initial
expression of interest is encouraged by no later than Friday, April 17.
