Rinzel is the recipient of the 2015 Arthur T. Winfree Prize for his
elegant work on the analysis of dynamical behavior in models of neural
activity and the contributions that work has made in the
neurobiological community to the understanding of a host of phenomena
(including simple excitability as well as bursting) in single neurons,
small populations of neurons, and other excitable cells.

Subject: SMB Prize Announcement: The 2015 Akira Okubo Prize
The Society for Mathematical Biology and the Japanese Society for
Mathematical Biology are pleased to announce that the 2015 Akira Okubo
Prize will be awarded to Joshua Plotkin, Professor of Biology and
Computer & Information Science at University of Pennsylvannia. In
2015, the Okubo Prize is awarded to a scientist under 40, for
outstanding and innovative theoretical work, for establishing superb
conceptual ideas, for solving tough theoretical problems, and/or for
uniting theory and data to advance biological science. Professor
Plotkin's outstanding research achievements in his career to date
amply satisfy these exacting criteria and do credit to the memory of
Professor Akira Okubo.
Professor Plotkin's undergraduate degree was in mathematics from
Harvard University. He then moved to Princeton, as a PhD student under
the supervision of Simon Levin and Martin Nowak. He was the first
graduate from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Interfaces Program at
Princeton, and was later awarded a BWF Career Award at the Science
Interface. His doctoral and post-doctoral research used mathematics to
make significant impacts on a wide range of biological debates. This
includes work on tropical trees and species-area curves, the evolution
of language and language acquisition, and the role of apoptosis and
DNA repair in tumorigenesis.
More recently Professor Plotkin has focussed on theoretical modelling
in evolutionary biology. He has worked extensively on the influenza
virus, where he has analysed unique data sets in ways that have
exposed novel structure in the diversity of strains. His theoretical
work in this area has potentially significant implications for public
health. More generally, a particular focus of his recent research has
been on adaptation in populations. For example, his work has provided
a theoretical basis for the role of neutral mutations, and for
inferring properties of an organism's fitness landscape from temporal
data.
Professor Plotkin's research achievements belie his young age. His
work is exciting and innovative, addressing fundamental issues in
population genetics and evolution. It is with great enthusiasm that
the committee awards him the 2015 Akira Okubo Prize.

Subject: Course: Computational Systems Biology, France, April 6-11
We are excited to announce the Advanced Lecture Course on Computational
Systems Biology, that will be held in the Aussois ski resort (France)
between April 6-11, 2015 (
http://compsysbio.inria.fr).
The main Course emphasis is methodological. One goal is to illustrate the
wealth and diversity of Systems Biology issues for scientists from Computer
Science, Mathematics and Physics. Another goal is to allow biologists
motivated by Systems Biology to go deeper into methodological issues in
order to facilitate their contacts with scientists from the formal sciences.
Sessions are preferentially organized around methodological issues:
multi-scale models, spatial dynamics, dynamical systems, inverse problems,
control theory, stochastic modeling, with a constant eye on biological
relevance (
http://compsysbio.inria.fr/program).
The Course will be an opportunity for participants to interact directly
with 15 prominent scientists in this rapidly growing field. In order to
facilitate casual interactions, there will be time for skiing in the
afternoon.
Participants are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract of their
current work to be presented as a poster in order to facilitate scientific
interactions. Nine abstracts will be selected for short talks by the
Scientific Committee. A few fellowships will be made available for
pre-doctoral students.

PhD position in mathematical modelling of the impact of human papillomavirus
(HPV) vaccination on HPV-associated cancers, University of Bern, Switzerland
We are looking for a highly motivated person to study for a PhD in a project
to investigate the potential future impact of human papillomavirus (HPV)
vaccination on HPV-associated cancers in Switzerland.
You will develop mathematical models to study the transmission of HPV and
the progression of HPV-associated cancers. The models will be used to
investigate the effect of geographical (cantonal) variation in vaccine
uptake and different vaccination schedules on the prevalence of HPV and
the incidence of HPV-associated cancers in Switzerland. In this project,
you will work together with epidemiologists and biostatisticians at the
Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern
and researchers from The Netherlands.
Requirements:
You should have strong quantitative skills with a Masters degree in a
relevant discipline such as computational biology, biostatistics,
mathematics or physics. Previous experience in infectious disease modeling
is an advantage.
The project is funded by Swiss Cancer Research (

with a salary on the doctoral student scale of the Swiss National Science
Foundation. The position is available for 3 years. The position is available

Postdoctoral Research Associate for Computational Cell Cycle Research
We are looking for a computational Postdoctoral Research Associate to join
an interdisciplinary project ? "Systems-level characterization of mammalian
cell cycle transitions". The goal of the project is to understand the
dynamic characteristics of the major cell cycle transitions (G1/S, G2/M,
meta/anaphase and mitotic exit) in untransformed human cells by combining
mathematical modelling with state of the art live cell imaging and
biochemical techniques. This work is supported by a new BBSRC Strategic
LoLa award to Bela Novak and Francis Barr (both in Biochemistry, Oxford),
Ulrike Gruneberg (Dunn School, Oxford), and Chris Bakal (ICR, London) and
Helfrid Hochegger (U. Sussex). We are looking for a highly motivated cell
cycle modeller who will be based in Novak?s group and will play a central
role in the project by interacting with all the experimental groups
involved.
Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant area, and be familiar with
mathematical modelling of biological regulatory networks. The post is
funded by BBSRC for 36 months in the first instance.
