Subject: Call for Proposal: SMB Annual Meeting 2018

The call for proposals to host the SMB Annual Meeting in 2018 is now
open.

This year's meeting will be held in Osaka, joint with the Japanese SMB.
In 2015 the meeting will be held in Atlanta, in 2016 in Nottingham,
joint with ESMTB, and in 2017 in Salt Lake City. We have established
a pattern of conferences alternating between North America (in odd
years) and elsewhere (in even years), and we are therefore
particularly interested in proposals from outside North America.

Proposals of no more than four pages should be made to the Chair of
the Future Meetings Committee by 20 June 2014, by e-mail at
<n.f.britton(a)bath.ac.uk>. The Chair strongly encourages prospective
proposers to contact him for further information before putting in
a proposal.

Subject: New NSF Math Sciences Innovation Incubator (MSII) activity

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Mathematical
Sciences (DMS) aims to enhance the synergistic relationships between
the mathematical sciences and other NSF-supported disciplines through
the Mathematical Sciences Innovation Incubator (MSII) activity. The
MSII activity encourages and supports new research collaborations
among mathematical scientists and other scientists and engineers
working in NSF-supported research areas of high national priority.

To apply for MSII support, after submitting a proposal to a non-DMS
program for a research project that involves mathematical scientists,
or a supplement request to include new mathematical scientists in a
research project supported by a non-DMS award, the Principal
Investigator must send an e-mail message specifying the name(s)
and affiliation(s) of the mathematical scientist(s) and the NSF
proposal ID to [ DMScofunding@nsf.gov ]. Transmission of this
e-mail message will constitute a request that DMS consider the
proposal or supplement request for MSII funding. More details see:

Subject: BIOMATH, a new journal in mathematical & computational biology

Announcing BIOMATH, a new journal in mathematical and computational
biology.

The BIOMATH Forum announces the launch of BIOMATH. An online,
peer-reviewed journal, BIOMATH will publish research covering
mathematical and computational biology. All articles in BIOMATH are
published open access without article-processing fees. BIOMATH is
now accepting papers for publication.

BIOMATH publishes original research papers of interest to specialists
within a given field in mathematical and computational biology. BIOMATH
editorial policy is to publish research papers based on their scientific
and technical validity and originality. Arbitrary judgements with
respect to "importance" will not be a criterion for publication. All
papers will benefit from rapid peer review and publication. The journal
is indexed by Mathematical Reviews, Zentralblatt MATH, EBSCO, and
Google Scholar.

BIOMATH is led by Roumen Anguelov as Editor-in-Chief. Roumen Anguelov
is presently the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Applied
Mathematics at the University of Pretoria, South Africa and works on
Reaction Diffusion models in Biology and Chemistry. He is supported by

"Toxicogenomics, High-Throughput Data & Network Analysis in NANO"
to be held in Aveiro, Portugal, on 1-5 September 2014.

This one-week post-graduate course, on its 8th edtion, aims to show
how molecular biology techniques can provide in-depth knowledge on
the mode of action and stress ensuing chemical exposure, with
particular focus on screening nanomaterials. The course includes a
combination of lectures and practical hands-on work, including RNA
extraction, cDNA synthesis, real time PCR, microarrays and analysis
of differential gene expression. Since such high-throughput
techniques may provide large quantity of data, data analysis is a
major topic, which in this course will be addressed via various tools,
including network analysis. Case studies will be included covering
both environmental and human toxicology. The course is addressed to
scientists and PhD and M.Sc. students with a background in Biology,
Natural and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental
engineering or related fields, as well as members of consulting
companies and of private and public institutions responsible for
environmental management. A maximum of 25 students will be admitted.
The students are encouraged to bring their own data to explore
analyses, if they wish to do so.

Thematics:
1. Basics of ecotoxicogenomics: strategies and designs
2. RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, Real time PCR
3. Development of microarrays: spotting, hybridization techniques
4. High-throughput data analysis, Network analysis
5. Environment and human toxicology case studies
6. Advantages of using high-throughput tools for nanotoxicology
7. Integration of omics in risk assessment
8. Web tools
