The SMB is joining the USA Science and Engineering Festival
for the first time this year to be held on April 26-27, 2014 at the
Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
We have designed some games to show how to use simple math to
understand the ways that ants find food, fight battles and choose
new homes.
Swing by Booth 4003 to meet some of our members who are generously
volunteering their time to help with this, and to pick up a special
surprise we've created (one per customer, please).

BioDynamics Workshop: Emergent Dynamics of Complex Biological Networks
University of Exeter, UK, 23-24 June 2014
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
we are hosting a two-day international workshop on the 23-24 June 2014
at the University of Exeter. The aim of this event is to bring together
biologists and mathematicians who are using cutting-edge techniques
(theoretical and/or experimental) to understand the emergent dynamics
of complex biological networks. Our hope is that the meeting will
stimulate multidisciplinary discussion, encourage the sharing of
current ideas and approaches, and lead to rewarding future
collaborations between theoretical and experimental scientists.
The workshop will consist of a number of keynote presentations
delivered by world-leading scientists, who will talk about their
cutting-edge current research and highlight important future
challenges within their field. Confirmed keynote speakers include:
Professor Duccio Cavalieri Fondazione Edmund Mach, San Michele
all'Adige, Italy
Professor Andrew Millar, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK
Professor Viktor Jirsa, Aix-Marseille Université, Marseille, France
Professor Krasimira Tsaneva-Atanasova, University of Exeter, UK
In addition to keynote presentations, the workshop will also feature
a number of selected shorter talks and poster presentations and we
encourage abstract submissions from both students and post-docs.
Deadline for abstract submission is 16th May 2014.
Registration fees:
"Early bird" registration up until 16th May: £25 for students and
post-docs, £75 for academics.
Registration after 16th May 2014: £50 for students and post-docs,
£100 for academics.

Subject: Workshop on Tumor-Immune Dynamics, CA, Jan 5-9, 2015
Workshop on Tumor-Immune Dynamics
January 5 to January 9, 2015
at the American Institute of Mathematics, Palo Alto, California
organized by Amina Eladdadi, Peter Kim, Dann Mallet, and Chae-Ok Yun
This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will be devoted to
mathematical and computational modeling of tumor-immune dynamics.
The main topics for the workshop are:
*Exploring the use of partial differential equations and/or agent-based
models in conjunction with or as alternatives to ordinary differential
equations when developing tumor-immune models,
*Identifying key questions in cancer immunology and immunotherapy that
are suitable and timely for mathematical modeling,
*Assessing modeling approaches and methods that are appropriate to
address these biological and medical questions,
*Determining what types of experimental studies and can inform model
development, Mathematical models that are informed by the current
state-of-the-art in cancer immune research will be intentionally
directed toward important questions and will provide a platform for
ongoing and increasing dialogue between mathematicians, biological
scientists, and clinicians.
The workshop will differ from typical conferences in some regards.
Participants will be invited to suggest open problems and questions
before the workshop begins, and these will be posted on the workshop
website. These include specific problems on which there is hope of
making some progress during the workshop, as well as more ambitious
problems which may influence the future activity of the field.
Lectures at the workshop will be focused on familiarizing the
participants with the background material leading up to specific
problems, and the schedule will include discussion and parallel
working sessions.
Space and funding is available for a few more participants. If you
would like to participate, please apply by filling out the on-line
form no later than September 5, 2014. Applications are open to all,
and we especially encourage women, underrepresented minorities, junior
mathematicians, and researchers from primarily undergraduate
institutions to apply.
Before submitting an application, please read the description of the
AIM style of workshop.

South Africa. The positions are also co-hosted by the African Institute
work on projects in the field of mathematical ecology and evolution.
Hui is a South African Research Chair (SARChI) in Mathematical and
Physical Biosciences and a core-team member of the Centre for Invasion
are related to, (i) testing niche-neutral assembly rules, (ii)
reconciling complexity-stability dilemma in ecological networks,
and (iii) synthesizing metabolic theory using optimization under
constraints. According to the performance, the positions can be
renewed after the completion of the first 2-year period. The
candidates need to have strong skills for numerical simulations and
relevant mathematical analysis. Applicants should send a cover letter
stating the motivation for the project, a CV with contacts of two
potential referees, and copies of their two best papers to Prof C Hui
candidates can take up the position immediately thereafter.
