Subject: 2014 FACM Conference at NJIT: May 22-23

On May 22-23, 2014, the Department of Mathematical Sciences at 
the New Jersey Institute of Technology will be hosting its 11th 
Annual Frontiers in Computational and Applied Mathematics 
Conference (http://m.njit.edu/Events/FACM14/). This two day 
conference will focus on the mathematical contributions of our 
colleague Robert Miura. Many of the plenary and minisymposia 
topics will be directly tied to work that arose from the 
seminal contributions of Miura to the field of mathematics. 
The main areas of focus will be nonlinear waves, completely 
integrable systems and mathematical biology and biostatistics.
Applications are now being solicited for contributed talks 
from junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate 
students. Selected applicants will receive full travel 
expense reimbursement. Other contributed papers for the 
Conference will be presented as posters. Funds are available 
for partial travel expense reimbursement for poster 
presenters. The deadline for all applications and submission 
of titles and short abstracts is April 15, 2014 (http://m.njit.edu/Events/FACM14/papers.html
Notification of acceptance will be sent out by April 25, 2014.

The University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) Postdoctoral 
Recruitment Day will introduce upper-level graduate students in
the biomedical sciences to the breadth and excitement of 
postdoctoral research and training at Michigan.

While on campus, recruits will network with current postdoctoral 
fellows and interview with prospective mentors.

Domestic airfare and travel expenses, accommodations, meals and 
entertainment will be provided by the UMMS Office of Postdoctoral 
Studies. To participate, graduate students must be U.S. citizens 
or permanent residents and expect to complete their Ph.D. thesis 
research in 2014. Exceptional international applicants will be 
considered for a limited number of slots. Only domestic airfare 
is funded.

Preview will be held June 12-13, 2014.

The application deadline for this year's preview is April 15, 2014.

CEH science objectives relating to disease ecology and risk

A full-time postdoctoral position is available in the Department of 
Integrative Biology at the University of South Florida. The postdoc 
will work as part of a multinational, multi-institutional NSF 
Polar Program funded project to study the bioenergetics and 
foraging strategies of endangered antarctic albatrosses. The 
postdoc will primarily be located in the lab of Dr. Leah Johnson 
at USF, jointly mentored by Dr. Sadie J. Ryan (SUNY-ESF), and will 
have significant opportunities to interact with scientists at the 
British Antarctic Survey (BAS). This project entails 
international collaboration and travel. 

Qualifications: The candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent 
degree in mathematical biology or a related field by the start 
date. Candidates with a background in dynamic energy budget or 
other bioenergetic modeling, statistics, population biology, 
sea bird ecology, applied mathematics, or similar will be given 
preference. Strong organizational, programming, and quantitative 
analysis skills are necessary. 

Preferred: Programming skills in R or C; knowledge of Bayesian 
statistics; experience in quantitative ecological modeling, 
geographical analysis, bioinformatics, or spatial modeling. 

Desired: Excellent oral/written communication; leadership and 
interpersonal skills; and demonstrated ability to work in teams. 
GIS skills a plus. 

The position is available beginning May 1, 2014, though the start 
date is flexible. Funding is available for three years. An initial 
appointment will be for one year with extension contingent on 
performance. Salary is $40-45K/yr, commensurate with experience, 
and includes full benefits.
