Subject: Support Available for Activities at NimBios

March 1, 2014 is the deadline for requests for support for Working Groups,
Investigative Workshops, Postdoctoral Fellows, Sabbaticals, and Short-term
Visitors for activities beginning fall/winter 2014 at the National
Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS). All areas
of research at the interface of biology and mathematics will be considered,
but we are especially interested in activities expanding beyond the areas
of research supported to date. Potential organizers of activities in areas
of molecular biology, cell biology, network biology, immunology and systems
biology are particularly encouraged to submit requests for support of
Working Groups or Investigative Workshops. NIMBioS, located at the
University of Tennessee-Knoxville, is an NSF-sponsored initiative to
foster interdisciplinary research at the interface between mathematical
and biological sciences. The institute's mission is to cultivate
cross-disciplinary approaches in mathematical biology and to develop a
cadre of researchers who address fundamental and applied biological
problems in creative ways. Other NIMBioS sponsors include DHS and USDA,
with additional support from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
More details are posted at http://www.nimbios.org

Summer Fellowships for Young Scientists at the International Institute
for Applied Systems Analysis, Austria

Funding is available for PhD students interested in three months of
collaborative research during June-August 2014 on Evolutionary and
Ecological Modeling at the International Institute for Applied Systems
Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria.

Young scientists from all countries are eligible for stipends provided by
IIASA's Evolution and Ecology Program (EEP) that contribute to travel and
accommodation costs. Students from Australia, Austria, Brazil, China,
Egypt, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia,
the Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, and
the USA are furthermore eligible for fellowships that provide full
coverage of travel, accommodation, and living expenses.

Model-based summer research projects are invited in the following
indicative areas:

Evolution of cooperation
Governance of common goods
Systemic risks and network dynamics
Eco-evolutionary dynamics
Evolutionary community ecology
Food-web evolution
Vegetation dynamics
Adaptive speciation
Disease ecology and evolution
Evolutionary conservation biology
Fisheries management
Fisheries-induced evolution
Adaptive dynamics theory and models
Spatial models in ecology and evolution

Applicants are encouraged to prepare a research proposal that corresponds
to their scientific interests and to the research agenda of their hosting
IIASA Program. Accepted applicants will begin work before the summer, by
planning their research in collaboration with their IIASA supervisors.
Previous experiences with implementing and studying evolutionary or
ecological models are important assets for working in EEP. To improve
chances of being selected, potential applicants are welcome to send
informal inquiries regarding their specific research interests and
plans to EEP's program director Ulf Dieckmann
(dieckmann@iiasa.ac.at<mailto:dieckmann@iiasa.ac.at>).

Online applications will be accepted until Monday, January 13, 2014
(24:00 CET).

Specialization: Environmental health in the Amazon region
Start Date: Fall 2014 Term
Application Deadline: January, 2014 (for fall)

Dr. Denis Valle, Assistant Professor in the School of Forest Resources
and Conservation at the University of Florida (UF), is now accepting
applications for a PhD Graduate Research Assistantship position.
Research in my group focuses on tackling important environmental
health problems by creating and using advanced statistical methods.

The assistantship includes full tuition coverage, Gator Grad Care health
insurance, and a yearly salary of $16,000 (MS student) and $20,000
(PhD student) for up to two (MS student) and four (PhD student) years.
The position will be located at the UF campus in Gainesville, FL.

The goal of this position is to study environmental drivers (e.g.,
climate and land use change) of human health in the Amazon region.
Despite its conservation importance, this region is still undergoing
massive land use /land cover change, with large impacts on public
health. This project will benefit from large-scale malaria datasets
from my group, as well as ongoing projects focused on evaluating
the public health /nutritional impact of dams in the region.
Potential field trips might be required. Duties include writing
and presenting result of research in scientific conferences,
searching and applying for additional sources of funding, and
assisting other students within the team on field activities or
statistical analyses, among others. Student will also be required to
serve as a teaching assistant for one course per year and will be
expected to produce manuscripts for publication in top scientific
journals.

Applicants should have:
· Prior experience in manipulating data in the statistical software R.
· experience with GIS
· Strong background on environmental sciences and/or public health
(with preference for experience in tropical developing countries)
with experience in (or want to become proficient on) advanced
statistical Bayesian models. Alternatively, this position could also
be filled by someone with a strong background in statistics who
wants to learn more about environmental science and public health.
· GRE minimum scores of 153 Verbal; 155 Quantitative;
  Analytical/writing 4 (500/700 old scoring scale)
· Undergraduate (for MS applicant) and MS (for PhD applicant) degrees

include the documents listed below:

· One page cover letter to include a brief review of your research
  experience, interests and goals
· CV with contact information
· GRE scores
