The Society for Mathematical Biology is proud to announce the winners of the
2014 Lee Segel Prizes for best paper in the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology.
The award honors the late Lee A. Segel, past-President of the Society and former
Editor of the Bulletin. This year's prize selection considered papers accepted
for publication from January 2012 up to the end of September 2013.
Recipients are honored with a cash amount of US$ 2000-3000, and are asked to
present their work at the SMB annual meeting. This summer, the meeting is to be
held in Osaka, Japan.

10th European Congress of Entomology
3-8 August 2014, University of York, York, England
For the first time there will be a session within the European Congress
of Entomology dedicated to the application of theory to understand insect
movement: Mathematical modelling of insect movement, dispersal and invasion.
Dispersal is the process that results in a coupling between local populations
and thus integrates them into an ecological entity. Dispersal of insects is an
essentially multiscale phenomenon with implications ranging from small-scale
individual animal movement, e.g. in search for food, to landscape-scale
dispersal coupling in metapopulations and to geographical scale phenomena
like biological invasions. Mathematical modelling has long been recognised
as a powerful research tool to understand ecological dynamics. The session
will focus on recent advances in mathematical approaches to dispersal with
the overall goal to reveal and emphasize cross-scale issues.

Subject: CfA NIMBioS Tutorial: Parameter Estimation for Dynamic Biological Models
The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS)
is now accepting applications for its Tutorial, "Parameter Estimation for
Dynamic Biological Models," to be held May 19-21, 2014, at NIMBioS.
Objectives: Modeling biological data requires powerful mathematical and
statistical tools and techniques. This tutorial is for biologists interested
in doing statistics with more complex non-linear models of their data
and for mathematicians interested in learning how to apply their modeling
skills to the unique demands of real dynamic biological data. Methods for
parameter estimation that will be taught include maximum likelihood and
ordinary least squares. Additional tools of model identifiability and
sensitivity analysis will be covered. Through a mixture of introductory
instruction and hands-on computer-based learning, participants will learn
software and tools they can use for biological data. Familiarity with simple
differential equation models or difference equation models is a prerequisite.

EPSRC PhD studentship on The Mathematics for Cell Motility
This studentship is jointly funded by EPSRC and the School of Mathematical &
Physical Science, University of Sussex.
The Project in detail:
Modelling the motility of cells is of great importance due to the central
role that it plays in phenomena such as embryonic development, cancer, tissue
development, and immune responses. The complexity of cellular processes
means that the precise mechanisms of cell motility are not fully understood.
Continuum models of cell motility are overwhelmingly phenomenological and
usually couple the mechanics of geometrically evolving objects describing the
cell membrane to partial differential equations for the involved biochemistry
posed either in the cell body or on the cell membrane.
Only recently has it been possible to simulate model equations using
numerical methods. New experimental techniques for tracking and imaging
cells as they migrate now provide high-resolution reliable time-series data,
suitable for use in mathematical modelling.
The goal of this studentship is to work on the blending of experimental
data of migrating cells with mathematical/computational modelling of cell
motility, which leads naturally to inverse problems. Model parameters,
or more generally functions, will be estimated from experimental data that
will drive the future mathematical modelling.
The project will be jointly supervised by Dr Anotida Madzvamuse
(
a.madzvamuse@sussex.ac.uk) and Dr Chandrasekhar Venkataraman
(
C.Venkataraman@sussex.ac.uk).
A Research Training Support Grant is available for additional training and
visits to conferences.
The successful applicant will be expected to undertake 60 hours per year
teaching undergraduate students in the Department of Mathematics, as a condition
of the award.
Award amount
Ŗ13726 tax-free maintenance bursary plus UK/EU fees waived for 3.5 years.

Only UK and EU residents are eligible.
UK residents are eligible for full awards, including fees and maintenance.
EU residents are eligible for awards covering fees only, but EU students who
have studied in the UK for the previous three years may be eligible for a

differential equations is also beneficial but not necessary.

A Postdoctoral position in Mathematical Biology is available at the Oregon
State University. The postdoc will work with Patrick De Leenheer, but is
encouraged to find other collaborators on campus to foster interdisciplinary
research. Candidates with expertise in ecology, population biology,
biochemical reactions, bioreactors, systems biology, within-host virus
models, and social networks are particularly encouraged to apply, although
applicants with other backgrounds in mathematical biology will receive
full consideration.
Requirements are: 1. PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or a related
field. 2. Strong analytical skills in ODEs, PDEs, discrete dynamics or
dynamical systems. 3. Highly motivated to pursue interdisciplinary research.
The position starts in fall of 2014, but the start date is negotiable. This
will be a fixed term annual appointment with the possibility of a 1-year
extension, depending on performance. The postdoc will be expected to teach
