Dear Colleagues,
the purpose of this email is to invite you, on behalf of the Organizers,
to participate at the upcoming 2014 Workshop "Dynamical Systems Applied to
Biology and Natural Sciences".
The Fifth Workshop "Dynamical Systems applied to Biology and Natural Sciences"
will be held at the Centro de Matemática e Aplicações Fundamentais (CMAF),
Lisbon University, in Portugal, from February 10 to 12, 2014. The workshop
has both theoretical methods and practical applications and the abstracts
included in the program will cover research topics in population dynamics,
eco-epidemiology, epidemiology of infectious diseases and molecular and
antigenic evolution.
The program includes lectures by the invited speakers, contributed talks

Nonlinear dynamics and stochastic methods: from neuroscience to other
biological applications
March 10-12, 2014
Pittsburgh, PA
This conference on nonlinear dynamics and stochastic methods will bring
together a mix of senior and junior scientists to report on theoretical
methods that proved successful in mathematical neuroscience, and to encourage
their dissemination and application to modeling in computational medicine and
other biological fields. This conference will coincide with a celebration of
G. Bard Ermentrout's sixtieth birthday. The invited speakers will present
on mathematical topics such as dynamical systems, multi-scale modeling,
phase resetting curves, pattern formation and statistical methods. The
mathematical tools will be demonstrated in the context of the following
main topics: i) Rhythms in biological systems; ii) The geometry of systems
with multiple time scales; iii) Pattern formation in biological systems;
iv) Stochastic models: statistical methods and mean field approximations.
The conference runs from March 10-12, 2014 at the University of Pittsburgh,
Pittsburgh, PA. Travel support may become available for young investigators.
Currently, this conference is partial funded by the Mathematical Biosciences
Institute and the University of Pittsburgh.

We are looking for a Senior Modeller to work on an EPSRC funded
interdisciplinary research project: A New Frontier in Design: The Simulation
of Open Engineered Biological Systems. We require a PhD scientist
with proven experience in the development, testing and application of
individual-based (IB) modelling approaches in multiscale environmental or
biological systems. Must have proven experience in programming IB models and
validating them in applied settings. Excellent skills in writing and team
working required, in addition to a good publication record. Must be capable
of working in an interdisciplinary environment, with microbiologists,
engineers, statisticians and mathematicians. Experience in software
engineering desirable.
You will develop, test and validate individual-based (IB) modelling approaches
in multiscale environmental or microbial systems. You must be capable

Temple University, Department of Mathematics, is seeking a Postdoctoral
Assistant Professor (non tenure track) in Applied Mathematics starting Fall
2014. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of
extension to three years per mutual agreement. The teaching load for the
first two years is one course per semester.
The candidate is expected to collaborate with Prof. Isaac Klapper (Temple
University, Department of Mathematics) and Prof. Phil Stewart (Montana State
University, Center for Biofilm Engineering), on an NIH-funded project directed
at studying the role of oxygen in microbial infection and disinfection.
Expertise in computational advection-diffusion-reaction equations and/or
mathematical biology is welcome, and should be noted in the cover letter.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, or a related field, by the
time of appointment.
The candidate will become a member the Applied Mathematics and Scientific
Computing group, and will receive access to Temple University's
high-performance computing resources.
The collaborative nature of this project may require the candidate to spend
one month each year at Montana State University (Bozeman, Montana) as a

Subject: Assistant/Associate Professor: Viral Information Group, SDSU
San Diego State University is recruiting candidates to join a new center
for Viral Information science. We are looking to build upon SDSU's current
strengths in the metagenomics, ecology, bioinformatics, and genetics of
viruses, in particular phage. The goals of the Viral Information group are
to study the interactions between the virosphere and the biosphere in order
to build a more complete understanding of how viruses affect the communities
in which they replicate and to be able to manipulate such interactions to
benefit human health and the health of the environment. Candidates will be
expected to contribute to a very creative, collaborative, energetic, and
productive working group interested in developing quantitative descriptions
of microbiological phenomena ranging from the molecular to the ecosystem
level. We anticipate four scientists will be hired over the course of
two years: two in 2014, and two in 2015. Candidates will be recruited
at the assistant or associate professor level. Position descriptions are
given below.
Genome Engineering/Synthetic Biologist - The Department of Biology seeks
to recruit a scientist who will be able to rationally modify organisms,
for example by building operons, pathways, and/or genomes, in ways that
permit testing hypotheses about biological processes and gene function
predictions. The successful candidate will employ modern genetic engineering
methods and develop new approaches to probe and test function with the help
of new models and methods.
Biomathematical Modeler - The Department of Mathematics and Statistics seeks
to recruit a theorist in support of the center for Viral Information. Ideally,
such theorist would be a polymath with strong foundations in computational
methods and the hard sciences and have demonstrated ability to apply these
methods to modeling biological processes at the community, population,
biochemical, and/or biophysical level. The ideal candidate would develop
novel probabilistic approaches and dynamical modeling techniques to predict
new functional features of existing and newly engineered organisms.
Biological Physicist - The Department of Physics seeks a biological physicist
who uses optics and/or microfluidics to study reactions at the single cell
or single molecule level. Approaches would include the combination of single
cell genomics to identify virus-host systems, using microfluidics and high
throughput methods to dissect unknown protein function.
Structural Biologist - The Department of Biology seeks to recruit a colleague
who will employ physical and/or computational modeling techniques in the
structural study of biological macromolecules and macromolecular interactions
of viruses and host cells and/or the effects of viral-dependent modifications
of host cells. Structural methods require no a priori knowledge of function,
and thus are extremely powerful tools to reveal function. Methods could
include X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, computational
structural modeling, NMR microscopy for functional screens.
All candidates will be expected to participate in the undergraduate and
graduate teaching mission of SDSU including mentoring of MS and PhD students.
