Subject: Workshop on Cell Based and Individual Based Modelling (CBIBM)

We are pleased to announce the first Workshop on Cell Based and Individual
Based Modelling (CBIBM) which will be held as part of the 2014 International
Conference on Computational Science in Cairns, Australia, on the 10th -
12th June 2014.

Individual and cell based models are increasingly being used to study the
behaviour of natural systems, from modelling individual cells to study tissue
development through to representations of whole organisms to study population
dynamics. The aim of this workshop is to bring together scientists who are
developing and using individual based modelling tools and software. The
workshop will cover all aspects of model and tool development but will
focus on the following.

- Computational or mathematical methods for the simulation (or analysis)
  of multicellular or multiagent systems.

- The development of simulation tools for multicellular or multiagent systems.

- The development of novel cell based or individual based models.

- Standards for specification of multicellular systems.

- Connecting individual based and continuum based modelling approaches.

- Novel applications of cell based and individual based modelling.

- Connecting individual based models to experimental data.

This call is for 10 page original research papers to be part of the workshop.
The deadline for submission is the 6th of January 2014.

For more details see: http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/conferences/CBIBM/ or email

Subject: Interested in graduate work in infectious diseases?

Check out the Ph.D. in Biology or the Ph.D. in Global Infectious Diseases
at Georgetown University:
http://biology.georgetown.edu/graduate or http://gid.georgetown.edu/

Research at Georgetown University in microbes and infectious diseases spans:
. Mosquito vectors of viral diseases [Armbruster Lab]
. Network modeling for viral disease ecology and epidemiology [Bansal Lab]
. Integrated regulation of metabolism and pathogenesis in Staphylococcus
  aureus[Brinsmade lab]
. Molecular and Cell biology of Giardia lamblia [Elmendorf Lab]
. Nutrient sensing and fungal responses [Rolfes Lab]
. Cell wall biosynthesis in Candida glabrata [Rosenwald Lab]
. Interactions between Giardia lamblia and its host [Singer Lab]

Graduate students at Georgetown University pursue research in diverse areas
of the biological sciences, ranging from molecular and cellular biology
to ecological genetics and behavior. Faculty members that specialize in
these areas emphasize collaborative research projects within and outside
of Biology, and this affords graduate students the opportunity to pursue
research questions that are truly interdisciplinary in nature. This broad,
interdisciplinary approach to research enables students to pursue novel
questions and conduct cutting-edge research.

Faculty members in the Department of Biology place a strong emphasis on
working individually with graduate students to ensure that they not only
possess all of the necessary skills for successful careers upon degree
completion but that they find positions in areas that interest them. Our
graduates have obtained jobs in academia, government, teaching, private
industry, and public policy.

The Biology Department at Georgetown University is housed within Regents
Hall, a new state-of-the-art life science building. Georgetown University is
situated in the picturesque and historic Georgetown region of Washington
D.C. Its location also provides unique opportunities to interact with
scientists who work in diverse institutions around Washington DC, including
the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and
the Smithsonian Institution.

PhD Studentship at the School of Mathematics, University of Manchester, UK

Applications are invited from UK/EU candidates for the project "Modelling
fetoplacental vascular sufficiency using placental dual-perfusion primed
microCT".  This project falls within the BBSRC Doctoral Training Programme of
the University of Manchester, UK.  The project supervisors are Oliver Jensen
(Mathematics) and Edward Johnstone & Paul Brownbill (Maternal & Fetal Health).

The project addresses mechanisms by which the fetal circulation within the
placenta can respond to spatial and temporal variations in maternal blood
flow.  The project will combine mathematical modelling with physiological
measurements performed using ex vivo placental lobules, accompanied by
high-resolution microCT imaging.

Further details are available from
http://www.dtpstudentships.ls.manchester.ac.uk/projects/studentship.aspx?id=1475

The application deadline is 6th December 2013, but interested candidates
are advised to make early contact with Oliver.Jensen@manchester.ac.uk.

PhD and postdoc positions in Bioinformatics / immuno-virology of viral
infections in the liver.

We are looking for PhD students and one Postdoc to work on research
projects in the area of bioinformatics / immuno-virology that are aimed at
better understanding the epidemiology and pathogenesis of hepatitis B and
C infection. These positions will be to work on several projects using
high-throughput technology (deep sequencing) to study the pathogenesis of
HBV and hepatitis C (HCV) infections. These positions are funded by NHMRC
Project Grant and other research funds, all investigating the role of viral
genomes in driving liver diseases during hepatitis infections.

Successful applicants will join a team of wet- and dry-lab researchers,
working on various aspects of the hepatitis C virus and immune responses
against the virus. This research is done in collaboration with experimental
scientists in the fields of virology and immunology.

The projects are suited to students with a strong background in a quantitative
discipline such as bioinformatics, computing science, physics, mathematics
or statistics.
