Subject: Call to AIBS Individual Members for Nominations for the AIBS BoD

Dear American Institute of Biological Sciences,

This call for nominations for open seats on the 2014 AIBS Board of
Directors is going out to you -- the AIBS Individual Membership. Learn more
about how candidates can be nominated and elected by members in the information
below and in the AIBS Bylaws (http://www.aibs.org/about-aibs/documents.html).

Deadline for nominations: September 30th 2013

Get involved in AIBS leadership!

Here is your chance to strengthen the biological community's leadership. The
AIBS Individual Membership elects two seats to the AIBS Board of Directors
(current roster at http://www.aibs.org/about-aibs/board.html). Both of these
seats are open for the 2014 - 2016 term. The Vice President, Secretary, and
four other Board-elected seats are also open. Members are invited to nominate
suitable individuals for all of the open seats described above. Candidates
do not have to themselves be members of AIBS. All nominations submitted
with (1) a signed statement of consent from each person so nominated, (2)
that person's CV, and (3) an explanation of how they can help AIBS achieve
the goals of its strategic plan will be considered for the ballot by the
AIBS Leadership Development Committee. Please email nomination materials
to the AIBS Executive Director Richard O'Grady, rogrady@aibs.org by 30
September 2013.

Members will be asked to vote on the two Member-elected seats later this
fall through online ballot.

M.Sc. position: Mathematical modelling - aquatic parasite dynamics

I invite applicants for an M.Sc. studentship in Biology involving the
mathematical modelling of an aquatic parasite. The research will involve
describing the effect of temperature and salinity on developmental rates,
determining how temporal trends in temperature and salinity affect population
dynamics, and validating the mathematical model with data. A competitive
salary will be offered and funding will be available for conference travel
and to pursue collaborations. Applicants should email Dr. Amy Hurford. This
email should include: (i) a short description of why you are interested
in the position, (ii) your CV, and (iii) transcripts pertaining to your
previous or ongoing studies (if possible). I will consider applications
as they are received. For full consideration applicants should indicate
their interest before September 15, 2013, although applications received
after this date may be considered. Applicants should be able to begin their
studies between January 1, 2014 and September 1, 2014.

Interdisciplinary training in biology, mathematics and/or experience in
computer programming is ideal, but only proficiency in one of these areas is
necessary where there is an interest to develop further skills in other areas.

Memorial University is located in St John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The
city offers many unique experiences with a vibrant arts community, stunning
coastline, and proximity to a variety of outdoor activities (hiking, fishing,
cross-country skiing, etc: http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com).

Funding Opportunity Announcement:
2014 NIH Director's Early Independence Awards

The National Institutes of Health Common Fund announces the FY 2014
funding opportunity for the NIH Director's Early Independence Awards (EIA)
<http://commonfund.nih.gov/earlyindependence/index.aspx>.  The EIA initiative
allows exceptional junior scientists to accelerate their transition to an
independent research career by "skipping" the traditional postdoctoral
training. To be eligible, candidates must be within one year (before
or after) of completion of their terminal degree or clinical residency
at the time of application.  Each institution (as defined by a unique
DUNS identifier) may submit up to two applications in response to this
FOA. Letters of intent are due Dec. 31, 2013. Applications are due January
31, 2014. See the instructions in the Funding Opportunity Announcement
<http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RM-13-009.html>
(RFA-RM-13-009).

To facilitate the "matching" of prospective candidates with
potential host institutions, the NIH Common Fund has created a website
(http://commonfund.nih.gov/earlyindependence/matchingportal/index.aspx) in
which institutions may indicate their interest in hosting EIA awardees and
provide pertinent information. This website will be updated periodically as
institutions provide information.  Interested institutions are encouraged
to provide information on the website by October 1, 2013. Prospective
candidates may visit this website to determine which institutions are
interested in hosting candidates and follow up directly with institutions
accordingly. Note that while registration by institutions is encouraged, it
is not required and institutions and candidates may match through other means.
Responses to Frequently Asked Questions about the Early Independence Awards
initiative are available at
http://commonfund.nih.gov/earlyindependence/faq2014.aspx.
An informational webinar has been scheduled for Oct. 10, 2013. Additional
webinar details will be posted on the EIA website
<http://commonfund.nih.gov/earlyindependence/index.aspx>
when they become available. Send questions about the EIA initiative to
earlyindependence@mail.nih.gov.

The NIH Common Fund (formerly the NIH Roadmap) encourages collaboration and
supports a series of exceptionally high impact, trans-NIH programs. These
programs are supported by the Common Fund, and managed by the NIH Office of
the Director in partnership with the various NIH Institutes, Centers and
Offices. Additional information about the NIH Common Fund can be found at
http://commonfund.nih.gov.  The National Institutes of Health (NIH) - "The
Nation's Medical Research Agency" - includes 27 Institutes and Centers and
is a component of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is
the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting basic, clinical and
translational medical research, and it investigates the causes, treatments
and cures for both common and rare diseases. For more information about
NIH and its programs, visit http://www.nih.gov.
