Subject: Postdoc: Virtual Fruit/grain Modeling, INRA-Avignon
Applications are invited for a two-year post-doc position available at INRA
Avignon, France.
The aim of the postdoctoral position is to get insights into the effect
of climate changes on fruit and grains/seeds quality traits, by means of
a process-based modeling approach. Indeed, water stress and fluctuating
temperatures can influence many processes occurring in grain/seed and fruit
development. The integration of the different mechanisms within a same model
can help to better understand their final effect on quality and identify
the most relevant ones.
Based on the "Virtual Fruit Model" developed at the INRA-Avignon group ,
the aim of the post-doctoral position is to produce a "Virtual Fruit and
Grain/Seed Model" able to simulate the effects of water stress and high
temperatures on product quality (fruit and grain/seed size, sugar content)
for several species (wheat, pea, tomato, peach,...), considering different
climatic scenarios. The main assumption of the "Virtual Fruit Model" is
that the fruit mainly behaves as a collection of cells, which facilitates
the transfer of concepts from one species to another.
Objectives of the project are
1. connect the dynamics of cells division to cell expansion which are both
important drivers of product quality;
2.compartmentalize the population of cells in different tissues (i.e. embryo
and endosperm of wheat grain) because it is an important issue for product
quality and its further use (conservation, post-harvest processing or
seed germination).
3. Account for the effect of water stress and high temperature on the rate
of cell division and/or expansion, according to experimental data.
After a bibliographical analysis of the subject, a conceptual model for the
"Virtual Fruit and Grain/Seed Model" will be proposed. It will explicit the
generic (i.e. cell division) or specific (i.e. acid or starch accumulation)
nature of each process. Mathematical formalisms and algorithms, model
programming, parameterization and test of the model will be main task in
terms of model development. The models will be then used to analyse the
effect of different climatic scenarios on product quality.

Subject: Postdoc: Computational/Mathematics of Cellular Homeostasis, U Pitt
A postdoctoral position is currently available with Michael Grabe at
the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Biological Sciences to use
computational methods to study the ionic regulation of acidic cellular
compartments. This is a 2 year NIH funded project aimed at understanding how
lysosomes and bone resorbing osteoclasts are able to achieve and maintain low
internal pH environments. In the past few years, the molecular identities
and biophysical characteristics of the ion channels and transporters that
regulate this process have been revealed. Nonetheless, the mechanism by
which these organelles achieve acidic pH values is not known and hotly
debated. The primary aim of this project is to construct biophysically
accurate models of lysosomes and the resorptive pit of osteoclasts in an
attempt to answer how low pH is achieved. All work will be carried out in
collaboration with Dr. Smita Nayak (Swedish Medical Center) and Dr. Joseph
Mindell (NIH). Our collaboration closely ties modeling and experiment,
and thus, it has the potential to produce high impact results that are
medically relevant to the treatment of bone diseases. Qualified candidates
will have a strong applied mathematics background with detailed experience
in ODEs, kinetic modeling, spatially realistic modeling, and Gibson-Bruck
type stochastic simulations. An understanding of membrane transport and
ion channel electrophysiology is desired, but not necessary.
The salary is competitive ($35,000-$45,000 US) and there are full benefits.

The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS),
located at the Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville, is currently accepting
applications for postdoctoral scholarship at the interface between mathematics
and biology. Highest priority will be given to those with explicit plans to
develop their ability to effectively carry on research across these fields. We
are particularly interested in requests to support research that integrates
diverse fields, requires synthesis at multiple scales, and/or makes use of or
requires development of new mathematical/computational approaches. NIMBioS
Postdoctoral Fellows are chosen based upon indications that the applicant's
research plans are consistent with the mission of NIMBioS, the applicant
has the demonstrated ability to carry out the proposed research, and the
opportunities provided through NIMBioS will enhance the capacity for the
research to be completed in an efficient and timely manner. Support: annual
stipend of $51,000, full University of Tennessee employee fringe benefits,
and an annual travel allowance of $2,000.

Position Description: Mathematics faculty members at San Francisco State
University are expected to engage in research and related professional
activities, teach advanced level and lower division classes starting with
elementary statistics, and perform service for the Department and the
University. This position seeks individuals who will engage in individual
PEZMAR original research and scholarly activities, seek external funding,
teach classes, advise students, supervise student research in areas related
to biostatistics or statistics, collaborate with other research teams in the
College of Science & Engineering by providing the essential biostatistics
infrastructure to their research projects, and, to a much lesser extent,
advise major statistics consumers of the University at-large. Some
administrative service is expected after tenure.
Required Qualifications: Earned Ph.D. in biostatistics, statistics, or the
mathematical sciences. For the Assistant Professor rank, there must be strong
evidence of professional accomplishment in biostatistics or statistics,
together with proven success in securing external funding or exceptional
promise in doing so. Candidates for the Associate Professor rank must have
an established record of research leadership in biostatistics or statistics,
and a track-record of continual success in securing external funding as PI.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in biostatistics research;
track record of funded or highly fundable grant proposals. Exemplary track
record in teaching; evidence of inclusion of students in research. Evidence of
