Subject: Online Cyber Café: NSF Secure and Trustworthy CyberSpace (SaTC)
Dear Colleagues,
DMS participates in the NSF Secure and Trustworthy CyberSpace
(SaTC) program. For program details please read the solicitation at
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504709.
On Friday, November 2, 2012, from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM EDT, the NSF Secure
and Trustworthy CyberSpace (SaTC) program will host an online Cyber Café,
which is open to the community.
The Cyber Café provides a forum for the computer science, mathematical
sciences, and social sciences communities to meet each other, discuss issues
of mutual interest in cybersecurity, and encourage research and cooperation
in this new area for the NSF SaTC program with the NSF Social, Behavioral,
and Economic (SBE) directorate.
To help planning the Cyber Café, please pre-register at
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TBQD9WD and indicate your likelihood of joining,
and your primary community.
you will receive a follow-up email with instructions on registering for this
event. Please be ready to provide a short statement about your interest,
accomplishments, and ideas for furthering this research direction.
The agenda for the Cyber Café will include:
. Discussions by NSF Program Directors on their expectations for the Cyber
Café, and opportunities for participants to pose questions to NSF;
. Virtual "Break-out" sessions organized by broader topics;
. Brief "Lightning" talks on technical issues;
. Small "Ice-breaker" group discussions on specialized topics;
. "Wrap-up" session for participants to share their insights and highlights
of the day.
In summary, the purpose of the Cyber Café is to promote engagement among
PIs and prospective PIs in this new area of interest for SaTC, facilitate
building of research teams, and help inform NSF of the new opportunities
in this area at the intersection of computer science, mathematical sciences
and the social sciences.
Please feel free to distribute this message to your colleagues. Questions
should be directed to Karl Levitt <

Subject: Postdoc: Multi-scale Modelling of the CD8 Immune Response, Lyon
Applications are invited for a two-year post-doc position available in
the interdisciplinary team "Dracula" at Inria
(
http://www.inria.fr/en/centre/grenoble), Lyon, France. The aim of this
post-doctoral position is to get insights into the behavior of a molecular
regulatory network describing an immune response, and to be able to couple
both intracellular and extracellular scales within a multi-scale model of
cell population dynamics.
The post-doc will have to build and to study a mathematical model of
a molecular regulatory network determining cell fate (proliferation,
differentiation or death) and implement it through an agent-based
model. Composed of several genes and proteins, whose activation depends on
the network itself and on external factors, the regulatory network will
be part of a multi-scale model describing at the macroscopic scale cell
population dynamics, and at the microscopic scale intracellular regulation
(including gene expression regulation and signaling pathways).
Modeling of regulatory networks will be based on differential equations,
although ultimately systems are expected to be coupled to partial
differential equations describing the macroscopic scale (cell population
dynamics). However, an agent-based approach will be first envisaged during
the post-doc, and the study of the continuous model (PDEs) will depend
on the relevance of the results obtained using hybrid agent-based models
during the first year of the post-doc.
This work will be performed in the framework of an ANR (French National
Research Agency) funded project and in close collaboration with immunologists,
located in Lyon (Inserm U851, head: Dr. J. Marvel), since the main application
will be the description of the CD8 immune response to influenza virus. The
objective is to build a multi-scale model of the CD8 T cell response. To that
aim, a description of CD8 T cell activation following antigen presentation
through activation of intracellular proteins via the TCR is a crucial point.
The motivated candidate will join an interdisciplinary group gathering
applied mathematicians and biologists. Hence interest for interdisciplinary
research is mandatory. The candidate will preferentially have a background
in mathematical or computational biology, with a practical experience of
modeling and scientific computing (Matlab, C++). Experience in:
- Gene networks,
- Cell population dynamics,
- Analysis of systems of ODEs or PDEs,
- Numerical computation,
will be a plus, yet it is not mandatory to be an expert in all the four
above-mentioned domains.
The position will be located in the "Dracula" team office on the University
Lyon 1 campus (
http://www.univ-lyon1.fr) under the supervision of Dr Fabien
CRAUSTE and Dr. Olivier GANDRILLON. The starting date of the post-doc should
be January 1st 2013.
To be considered for the position, please send your CV, your list of
publications, a motivation letter, and the names of two referees to
Dr. Fabien CRAUSTE (
crauste@math.univ-lyon1.fr, or
+33 (0) 472 437 489),
and to Dr. Olivier GANDRILLON (
olivier.gandrillon@univ-lyon1.fr, or +33
(0) 472 437 509), in pdf format.
