Subject: CfP: Information and Computation on "Hybrid Systems and Biology"

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of Information and Computation  on "Hybrid Systems and Biology"
http://hsb2012.units.it/

Submission deadline:
February 15, 2013

Guest Editors:
Ezio Bartocci (Vienna University of Technology, Austria)
Luca Bortolussi (University of Trieste, Italy)
Scott A. Smolka (University of Stony Brook, USA)

Journal web site:
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/information-and-computation/

Call for papers:
Information and Computation calls for paper submissions for a peer-reviewed
special issue on "Hybrid Systems and Biology".  This Special Issue stems
from the First International Workshop on Hybrid Systems and Biology held
in Newcastle, UK, in September 2012. We now extend an open invitation for
contributions to the Special Issue which present cutting-edge research in
the area of the Workshop (Hybrid Systems and Biology).  Original papers are
sought in all areas that relate to the relevance and potential of hybrid
systems modeling and analysis in systems biology. Of special interest are
contributions that discuss complex biological systems requiring the adoption
of computational methods that have not been investigated so far in the context
of hybrid systems, as well as extensions of already existing techniques.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
 - Computational and mathematical analysis techniques for hybrid systems (i.e.
reachability, model checking, abstract interpretation, bifurcation theory
for hybrid dynamical systems, stability analysis, etc.)
 - Hybrid system identification techniques (learning the model from the
experimental data)
 - Efficient simulation techniques for hybrid systems
 - Hybrid modeling languages
 - Hybrid systems coping with incomplete and uncertain information
 - Hierarchical Hybrid Systems for multi scale analysis
 - Stochastic Hybrid Systems
 - Hybrid simulation (stochastic/deterministic) methods
 - Abstraction and Approximation techniques
 - Hybrid Systems modeling for Synthetic Biology
 - Hybrid Control of biological systems
 - Sensitivity analysis for hybrid systems
 - Behaviour-driven parameters identification for hybrid systems
 - Analysis and simulation tools

Submission Guidelines:
Papers should be submitted toluca@dmi.units.it  andezio.bartocci@tuwien.ac.at
in the Elsevier format.  Manuscripts submitted to this special issue
should have at most 25 pages, including figures, tables, and the list of
references. Manuscripts should be original papers: manuscripts are accepted
for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published,
nor is presently submitted, elsewhere.  However, papers previously presented
in conference proceedings of limited circulation are usually eligible for
publication in revised and extended form.

For queries about this special issue, please feel free to contact the
special issue guest editors:
Ezio Bartocci (ezio.bartocci@tuwien.ac.at)
Luca Bortolussi (luca@dmi.units.it)
Scott A. Smolka (sas@cs.stonybrook.edu)

Important dates:
Paper submissions: February 15, 2013
Acceptance notification: May 15, 2013
Final papers: June 30, 2013

Subject: Postdoc: Stochastic Systems Biology, Integrative Systems Biology, OIST

We are looking a highly motivated doctorate to work in several
interdisciplinary projects focused in stochastic gene expression, diffusion,
and effects in key cell signal transduction processes. Ideal candidates will
have a background in Mathematical and/or Computational Sciences and a strong
interest to collaborate with experimental biologists. Previous experience
with dynamical systems (ODEs, PDEs) and Matlab programming is expected,
while experience in biological/chemical reaction modelling and stochastic
simulation (temporal and spatio-temporal) is a plus. Motivated postdocs may
have the opportunity to perform experiments in our wetlab, should they desire
to do so, while models will be calibrated closely with experimental data.

Specific projects will entail constant feedback and cooperation with
experimental and theoretical groups both inside and outside Japan. Thus,
the postdoc is expected to work in groups, have excellent personal and
communication skills, and a willingness to communicate research results to
interdisciplinary audiences.

The successful candidates will join the Integrative Systems Biology Unit
of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST ? for group
information please visit https://groups.oist.jp/node/894), and will work
under the supervision of Assistant Professor Tatiana T. Marquez-Lago. OIST
is a university with no departments, eliminating artificial barriers between
people working in different fields. English is the language of instruction and
a large segment of the faculty and student population is international. The
postdoctoral position includes competitive salaries to international
standards, on top of housing, commuting and relocation allowances.

For further information and to submit application materials, please email
tatiana.marquez (at) oist.jp. Interested candidates should send a composite
PDF containing their CV, list of publications, names and contact information
for 3 references, and brief statement of specific research interests.

* OIST is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages
applications from women.
