We are looking for an ambitious PhD student to work on an interdisciplinary project at the University of St Andrews. We study mechanical interactions during morphogenesis. In this project, we will investigate how forces can be generated within individual cells and mediated across tissues. We aim to use PDE descriptions and agent-based models of cell-cell interactions to understand mechanical regulation in a contracting tissue. Specifically, we will use pulsatile contractions during pupal development in the fruit fly Drosophila as a model system. The project will be jointly co-supervised by Jochen Kursawe in the School of Mathematics and Statistics and Marcus Bischoff in the School of Biology.
