In this issue of the News section, we highlight the recently elected leaders of SMB, including the President-Elect and members of the Board of Directors. We also honor Mrs. Evelyn Landahl, who has had a lasting impact on the Society. Also, check out the ongoing events related to the Year of Mathematical Biology!
SMB Leadership
- The Society for Mathematical Biology members elected Alexander (Sandy) Anderson (H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute) to the office of President-Elect in this year’s elections. Dr. Anderson assumed that office at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Society in Sydney, Australia. His term as President will begin at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Society in Montreal, Canada. Read more about Dr. Anderson in the interview here by Dr. Jennifer Flegg.
- Elected to the Board of Directors are Peter Kim (University of Sydney), Doron Levy (University of Maryland) and Elissa Schwartz (Washington State University). Each will serve a four-year term, which began at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Society in Sydney, Australia. You can learn more about Dr. Peter Kim in the interview here by Dr. Jennifer Flegg. We will include interviews with each newly elected Board of Directors member in future Newsletters.
The Society owes a great debt of gratitude to Santiago Schnell (University of Michigan) for his service as President and Past-President of the Society, and Heiko Enderling (H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute), Jane Heffernan (York University), and Mary Ann Horn (Vanderbilt University) for their service on the Board of Directors.
Please join us in congratulating our new leadership! We look forward to a time of continued success for SMB in the coming years.
We look forward to receiving more news of achievements, such as prizes, election into academies, and named professorships. Send them along so that we can highlight SMB’s outstanding members!
In Honor of Mrs. Evelyn Landahl
In this issue of the Newsletter, we honor the legacy of Mrs. Evelyn Landahl, who passed away in December 2017. Mrs. Landahl was a steadfast and generous supporter of the Society. She has been the largest single donor to the society, and her support has made it possible for hundreds of trainees to attend the SMB Annual Meetings and to be recognized for their exceptional research.
Please read about Mrs. Landahl’s SMB legacy here. We express sincere gratitude to Mrs. Landahl and the Landahl family for their support of SMB.
We are also honored to share sentiments from the Landahl family:
“Our mother Evelyn Landahl was devoted to our father Herbert, to his brilliant scientific research and teaching career, to us children and to our extended family. She recognized the importance of supporting bright and promising young graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, on whose shoulders rests the future of mathematical biology/biophysics. Her additional monetary contributions to the H.D. Landahl legacy of educating future mathematical biologists/biophysicists, essential to progress in many areas of collaborative basic scientific research, include establishment of similar H. D. Landahl awards for undergraduate students at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, as well as for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the University of California, San Francisco.”
