SMB teams up with the Japanese Society for Mathematical Biology to organize an international meeting for mathematical biology in Sydney, Australia! The conference, hosted by the University of Sydney, features many exciting talks and research features. Other events include the welcome reception on Sunday evening, an evening poster session on Monday, and a Women’s lunch on Tuesday. The conference dinner to be held at Luna Park at the northern foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be an amazing time!

The plenary speakers are sure to give dynamic and interesting talks:

    University of Melbourne

  • Jane Heffernan
    York University, Toronto

  • Yoh Iwasa (Akira Okubo Prize Winner)
    Kyushu University

  • Alex James
    University of Canterbury, New Zealand
  • Toshiyuki Nakagaki
    Hokkaido University

  • Hugh Possingham
    University of Queensland

The spring has been a time of great accomplishments and activities for members of SMB. We are excited to share some of them with you.

SMB Members in the News
  • Marc Mangel, professor of applied mathematics and statistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). Professor Mangel is recognized for his contributions to mathematical biology and will be inducted into AAAS in October 2018, in a ceremony held in Cambridge, Massachusetts. You can read more about Professor Mangel and this significant honor here.
  • Santiago Schnell, John A. Jacquez Collegiate Professor of Physiology, has been elected a Foreign Corresponding Member of the Latin American Academy of Sciences. Professor Schnell is recognized for his distinguished and continuing contributions to science. You can find the press release here.

Please join us in congratulating Marc and Santiago on these great honors!

SMB participates in the USA Science and Engineering Festival

The Society for Mathematical Biology participated in the 5th USA Science and Engineering Festival held on April 7-8, 2018 in Washington, D.C. SMB hosted a booth at the festival and engaged visitors in hands-on simulations of the spread of infectious disease.

SMB member Cara Peters (Ph.D. Candidate in Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing at the University of Maryland – College Park) provides a summary of the exciting event here.

What a great opportunity to increase excitement about math and its many applications!

Upcoming meeting
