This is a reminder that abstracts for talks and posters at SMB2018
close on 24 March. Abstracts for talks include both talks at
minisymposiums and for contributed talks. If you have agreed to give a
minisymposium talk and are not sure whether the minisymposium has been
accepted, please contact the minisymposium organiser.
To ensure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to
present, SMB2018 in implementing a policy where each person can only
present once, either at a minisymposium, or a contributed talk or a
poster. (This does not prohibit researchers being a non-presenting
co-author on others’ talks or posters.) Please bear this in mind when
planning what abstracts you will submit.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is excited to host the 3rd
biennial Midwest Mathematical Biology Conference from May 19-20, 2018
in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The conference will feature three outstanding
plenary speakers:

Dr. Stephen Ellner, Cornell University
Dr. John Pastor, the University of Minnesota – Duluth
In addition, the meeting will provide ample opportunity for presenting
and sharing new ideas from all areas of mathematical biology research
and education. As part of the registration process, individuals may
select one of two concurrent workshops with the following themes:
1. R-Bootcamp: A gentle introduction to the R programming language
and its uses in mathematical biology. Lead by Dr. Eric Eager, UW-La
Crosse
2. Ecological Data Science: Increasingly, ecologists require data
science to study their interactions and guide natural resource
management. Participants will be introduced to data science skills and
how these skills can be applied to ecological systems. Lead by Dr.
Richard Erickson, U.S. Geological Survey Upper Midwest Environmental
Sciences Center

The Centre for Applied Mathematics in Bioscience and Medicine

NSERC-CREATE in Complex Dynamics of Brain and Behaviour
(cd-create.org/home), will be hosting the 12th joint summer
school entitled “Nonlinear Dynamics in Life Sciences with Applications
to Neuroscience and Psychology” between June 18th and 29th 2018. The
summer school is funded by the generous support of William K. and
Katherine W. Estes Fund and the Psychonomic Society.

The summer school aims to prepare undergraduate, graduate and
postdoctoral trainees to the field of mathematical and computational
biology with a focus on two current topics; namely, neuroscience and
psychology. For two weeks the participants will have the opportunity
to benefit from the instruction of international experts in the field
of mathematical modeling and nonlinear dynamics as well as leading
experimental scientists in neuroscience and Psychology. Participants
will apply their knowledge and skills through the various lab
activities, and also through the presentation of their research
projects.
The summer school will prepare participants to the increasing demand
in academia, government, and industry for people with
cross-disciplinary training who, with various degrees of competence,
can speak the languages of the mathematical, physical and biological
sciences.
The summer school is completely free. Financial support to cover meals
and lodging will be provided for participants that are accepted into
the summer school. Furthermore, limited travel awards will be also

We would like to inform that we are organizing the forthcoming
Advanced Course as part of the Intensive Research Programme Recent
Progress in Mathematical Biology: School on Mathematical Modelling of
Tumour Growth and Therapy, to be held from April 3rd to 6th, 2018 at
the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM).
Recent years have witnessed a renewed interest in mathematical
modelling of tumour growth and therapy. This increase in activity in
this area has been boosted by enhanced access to data (OMICS, medical
imaging) and recent developments in the area of multi-scale modelling.
This course is aimed at introducing recent progress in the field of
mathematical modelling applied to tumour growth and oncology,
particularly focused in the emergence of new modelling and analytical
multi-scale techniques and the new opportunities for model validation
based on increased availability of data. The course is particularly
aimed at an audience composed of graduate students and postdocs in
mathematics with an interest in the applications of mathematics to
biology.

Subject: Postdoc: Hippocampal information processing, New Orleans
A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the computational
neuroscience lab of Carmen Canavier in the School of Medicine,
Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at LSU Health Sciences Center
in New Orleans. The position is to study cholinergic contributions to
hippocampal information processing in close collaboration with
electrophysiologist Sonia Gasparini. The successful candidate will
construct a morphologically and biophysically realistic model of a
hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neuron to explain the observed frequency
selectivity of different dendritic regions for slow versus fast gamma
band inputs. Some network modeling will also be required for the
project.

The Lofgren Lab in the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health
at Washington State University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research
Associate to support an ongoing CDC-funded research project on the
dynamics of healthcare-associated infections. Two such positions are
available. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will have access to an
extensive infection surveillance database and will be working with a
diverse team of biomedical and computer science researchers working to
understand how the stochastic dynamics of infections within hospitals
impacts surveillance, intervention evaluation, and clinical care.
Responsibilities of the position include the mentoring of graduate and
undergraduate students in the lab; the analysis of datasets; the
design, implementation, and analysis of mathematical models of disease
transmission; and the preparation of manuscripts and conference
abstracts. The specific focus of the Postdoctoral Research Associate
can be tailored to their interests and expertise but will likely
include the implementation and analysis of stochastic network models
of disease transmission addressing a broad range of clinically-driven
questions, including surface decontamination, hand hygiene,
antimicrobial stewardship, and active surveillance.

We have one or two vacant positions in Mathematical Modelling of
Infectious Diseases (80-100%) to contribute to projects about the
scale up of antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa, including
the spread of drug resistance to HIV and tuberculosis, and about the
effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of new methods of partner
notification for chlamydia infection. Other relevant ISPM projects
include studies of the spread of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial
sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea and Mycoplasma
genitalium projects, and the (sexual) transmission of Zika virus.
The projects are funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH),
UK National Institute of Health Research and/or the Swiss National
Science Foundation (SNSF).
The posts are initially offered for 2 years, with flexible starting
dates. Salary is commensurate with experience.
