The Sixth G. J. Butler International Conference on Differential Equations and
Population Biology will be held on the University of Alberta campus, Edmonton,
during July 23-27, 2018.

The scientific scope of the Butler conference covers two important fields of
research. In differential equations, the scope covers ODEs, PDEs, FDEs, and
abstract dynamical systems. The scope on population biology has grown from the
traditional ecology to include microbiology, epidemiology, physiology, cell
biology, systems biology, immunology and other medical applications. With
researchers from two research fields in close contact for a concentrated
period, the Butler conference presents a unique opportunity to promote and
nurture cross-disciplinary collaborations and interdisciplinary research. Many
of the plenary speakers are world leaders in interdisciplinary research.

An important tradition of the Butler conference is its emphasis on promoting
research and training of graduate students and young researchers. Special funds
are designated for the reduction of registration fees for all HQP participants
and for accommodation support for selected HQP participants. The regional,
national and international network that has formed through the Butler
conference series will be extremely beneficial for graduate students and young
researchers.

Hope to see you in Edmonton.

subject: Postdoc/programmer position in reaction-diffusion modeling, OIST

The Computational Neuroscience unit (groups.oist.jp/cnu) at the Okinawa
Institute of Science and Technology, Japan has an opening for a postdoctoral
researcher or technician in software development and computational modeling of
stochastic neuronal reaction-diffusion processes. Initial duration is two years
with an option to extend.

The hired postdoctoral researcher or technician is expected to make valuable
contributions to the STEPS project (steps.sourceforge.net) in two ways:
1) by researching molecular neuronal processes and designing novel techniques
and routines for accurate computational modeling of such systems, and 2)
contributing to realistic applications of the new techniques in biological
modeling studies. In performing these tasks, the candidate is expected to
contribute to publications that are either based on theory and computational
techniques, or geared more towards answering real biological questions through
computational modeling. As such the ideal candidate will have a scientific
background but also possess good programming skills.

There will be many opportunities to interact with other STEPS developers in our
lab and also other researchers working on related cerebellar projects, and also
to collaborate on STEPS development with the Blue Brain Project, EPFL, Geneva.

Competences:

For the postdoctoral position a recent PhD is required in a relevant discipline
such as neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics or biochemistry, and for a
technician a masters degree is required in a similar discipline or computer
science. For either position, we require a talented programmer with experience
in C++ and Python. It is preferred that the candidate has some experience of
modeling neuronal or other biological processes computationally, but this is
not essential if the candidate has a strong enough interest in moving into the
field. Fluent English conversation and writing skills are required.

Benefits / Offer:

A competitive salary and relocation package are offered. This an ideal position
to gain experience in a prominent computational neuroscience lab. Contributions
of technicians are honored by authorship on relevant publications.

Please contact Prof. Erik De Schutter (erik@oist.jp) for inquiries.

Title:Postdoc: Circadian clock, Sleep and Cognition, KAIST, Korea

A postdoc is sought to join a HFSP-funded project to study analog cortical
computations in linguistic processes. A collaboration with Naama Friedmann
(TAU) and Remi Monasson (ENS). Ideal candidates have a flair for (some)
language, come from a background we have not thought of and seek to get to
places where they have not been, at the crossroads between neuroscience,
complex systems, and poetry.

The Kim Lab (mathsci.kaist.ac.kr/~jaekkim/) at the Korea Advanced
Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)’s Department of Mathematical
Sciences has announced a postdoctoral fellow to join a HFSP-funded project:
development a mathematical model and performing data analysis to investigate
the function of the circadian clock to mediate sleep-regulated neurophysiology
and cognition in collaboration with an optogenetic lab (U of Düsseldorf) and
sleep labs (U of Michigan and U of Groningen). The position is supported by
Human Frontier Science Program (www.hfsp.org/funding/research-grants).
It will be renewed yearly subject to satisfactory performance.

Candidates should have experience in the mathematical modeling of biological
systems and an understanding of biochemical kinetics and cell biology. Data
analysis experience (e.g. Machine learning) is recommended, but not required.

For inquiries, please contact Prof. Jae Kyoung Kim via email at
jaekkim@kaist.ac.kr. Applications, including a full CV, a cover letter
explaining suitability for the position, and the names and addresses of two
referees should be sent to Prof. Kim.
